Optometrist here : 1 mistake, --it is not the iris' " Lack of Melanin " that causes photo-sensitivity--it is the Retinal Pigment Epithelium--one of the 10 layers of the retina ( light processing nerve tissue in rear of the eye). Retinal Pigment Epithelium It is a layer of cuboidal epithelial cells that is attached to the choroid. This layer consists of a black pigment that prevents reflection in the eyeball. The iris is the cosmetically most obvious indication of low melanin, however, but it is the deepest layer of the retina (Retinal Pigment Epithelium) that is actually responsible for "photo-phobia".
