I assume they use velcro because it was always difficult to snap it together with the buttons. What they should have used is magnets. Have the magnets inside the straps and keep the buttons on there so it looks like they're using buttons. They still have the buttons on the current ones but you can see the velcro. You wouldn't be able to see the magnets.
