10 Harmful Foods if You Have Hashimoto's (AVOID These Foods)

If you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis then these 10 foods should be avoided. Did you know that the foods that you put into your mouth impact the course of Hashimoto's?

It's true, foods can either positively impact or negatively impact thyroid function and that includes people who have autoimmune thyroiditis.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is both an autoimmune disease as well as a thyroid condition and both must be addressed if you want to see improvement.

The good news is that by changing your diet, it is possible to see an improvement in both immune function and thyroid function and potentially even reverse or halt the damage your immune system is doing to your thyroid gland.

This list of foods is notable for patients who have Hashimoto's because these food groups cause problems with either your immune system OR with thyroid function OR both.

If you have Hahsimoto's, make sure you are AVOIDING these foods.

Did any of these foods surprise you? Are you already avoiding them? Let me know below!

I went a year on a dairy, gluten and processed sugar and foods. I was miserable. I went in at 100%. I didn't cheat I almost only ate food at home. I ended up being obsessed and became so anxious about food and being around people eating. I had to research a restaurant and if there was nothing I could eat I would either ask to go somewhere else or just not go. It seriously messed me up. I was doing all this under a naturopath that insisted I never eat any of these things again. After a year I had to stop. I lost a ton of weight but felt horrible and now had an eating disorder. I added dairy in first and slowly started feeling a bit better. Then I added back gluten and felt even better. When I added back processed foods/sugar. I started feeling a little worse. So I decided to just be very careful of the processed foods/sugar. and eat whatever else I wanted. 10 years later I'm still anxious around food and have had a few panic attacks eating out at restaurants. I try to eat a balance diet and consult a nutritionist to stay on track. I just want people to not do what I did and become obsessed with food. Eat in moderation and if you find you don't feel well after a particular food try to have it in very limited quantities. My number one trigger that makes me feel horrible are onions. I'm ok in very small quantities but have to be careful.
I'm sorry for the ramble I just don't want anyone to go through what I did and become obsessed.

OMG I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 41 and packed on 40 lbs in one year. I'm 69 now and no one ever said the word Hashimoto . I've tried every diet known to man with no results. None of this was ever explained. I feel so blessed to have found Dr. Child's Channel. Now maybe I can make some progress.

Hi. I too am 57 years old, and have had thyroid issues since early 30's. Was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 10 years ago, and kind of naturally avoided everything you mentioned. I eat everything I want, which is within those parameters, and forget I have this diagnosis. If I just roll with things, I' m good

Going gluten free has helped with my thyroid inflammation tremendously. I am really glad you said coffee was bad for the thyroid of Hashimoto's patients. Everyone I know drinks an obsessive amount of coffee and asks me why I don't do the same. I have tried in the past to drink coffee with all the cool kids. But I always felt sick, tired, unhealthy! Then I started getting migraines. They were so bad I would throw up. After some research (it's nearly impossible to find anyone who says coffee can be bad for some people), I suspected coffee might be the culprit. After going completely caffeine free (giving up green tea and chocolate was harder than giving up coffee), I no longer have any headaches at all. When I tell people I don't drink or eat any caffeine they usually are shocked or feel sorry for me but I feel the best I've ever felt. People I know are so addicted to coffee (they even wear shirts admitting their love affair with coffee) that when I ever suggest they give it up, a fight is sure to ensue, so I keep my mouth shut. I am grateful to know to cure to my headaches and fatigue-ditching caffeine.

You share so much really helpful information in such an efficient amount of time. I've learned more watching these videos then from endocrinologists or even naturopaths. Thank you! It's great confirmation of much that I've learned over the years and am trying to implement. I still have some dairy and some processed foods, but have recently cut out coffee and processed sugar!

Your videos, and videos like these are the BEST thing about the internet! I was getting so tired of telling my doctors their blood tests were WRONG (you confirmed this) and they had no answers. At 64 I think I’ve had this since I was 5 based on symptoms, I’ve conquered it a few times eating strictly and being out in the sun and active for hours a day, all on my own, but we all slip and the weight returns which complicates things yet again. ? What about drinking teas??? THANK YOU for all the details, to help refine how and what I eat. Still a tricky thing to get right. You are a shinning start of information! Again, thank you!!!

Love your channel and have learned so much about Hashimotos from you. I was a diet cola drinker for years. I consumed 4-6 daily for years. I recently quit and within 3 days my heart rate increased to 132 bpm at rest. I then developed hyperthyroid symptoms which were scary! Initially, I had been well controlled on 75 mg NP thyroid for 5 years. After I have eliminated diet cola, I am now taking 15 mg of NP thyroid med daily. My heart rate and blood pressure have normalized. All the hyperthyroid symptoms are gone after 4 months! It has been a long process to get to this point. I hope this can help some of you with Hashimotos. Nobody ever told me to stop or the impact it can have on your thyroid.

Thank you very much, Dr. Childs. None of the endocrine doctors I have consulted have ever given me any of this important information. They have only talked about T3, T4, TSH, hypo/hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto and autoimune…

Thank you. You are so appreciated. At 65 I can relate what you say to over 30 yrs of my personal suffering. BUT, 2 years ago I discovered Rife technology. 2 yrs of my endocrinologist telling me I will be on this high dose of levothyroxine for the rest of my life, “ABSOLUTELY NO IODINE FOR YOU” (I’d say in my head “watch me”) she just, as in two weeks ago lowered my dose. Not once in 2 years did she discuss gluten, diet, lifestyle etc. just snickered at the number of supplements I took. I felt like a number on her pay invoice. With your help I’m going to beat this. Rife is a huge tool for me to utilize your information. THANK YOU.
