Thanks guys, I was on my daily jog and a massive army with more numerous yet lower quality troops were blocking my path. Luckily I watched this on the way and was able to whip out this crescent formation and used it to crush my enemy

There was a 5 day waiting period for who was gonna attack first in the marathon battle.

Great info. I’m designing a large strategy game that includes tons of formations and this helps because the army I intend to play as once it’s finished is much smaller but better quality than that of my numerically superior opponent

This is like the lovechild of Oblique order and feigned retreat. But it hinges entirely on army cohesion, especially in the center.

That's always a risky maneuver. There's the risk of miss coordination or having the front broken.
Or again the enemy could hide troops on one or both flanks for a counter-encirclement. Usually it works, but, there are always problems and inconvenients.

Definitely have to try that in battle brothers

I wonder how many of these tactics would actually work in various Total War games.

I like the use of Eastern general portrait and Greek portrait from Rome: Total War

I used this tactic a lot in Rome: Total War, though I didn't know it got a name. Another version of this tactic is to place weaker units in the middle and stronger ones on the flanks, so that they quickly break out the opponent's flanks and come from the rear to his center.
