Crassus: Don’t worry men, we’ll just wait here until they run out of arrows.

My favourite of this tactic was when Athens beat Sparta by using hit and run skirmishers against a heavy hoplite phalanx and forced them to surrender- something which a Spartan army was never supposed to do.

I'll keep this in mind for my next battle

Alexander the Great had to deal with this sort of tactic when he was in war with the scythians for 2 years. In the battle of Jaxartes to beat this he used his light cavalry as bait, let part of his army be surrounded on purpose, used foot archers to immobilize for a moment and attacked with heavy cavalry.

It’s like later generals that dealt with these tactics don’t read books about this tactic to beat them back.

You need to point out that to keep this tactic going for almost 8 hours Surena used camel to resuplies the horse archer, Crassus previously hoped the Parthian would run out of ammunition but seeing the endless barrage of arrow and hearing the lost of his beloved son news he broke down and his man need to tell him to evacuate.

Surena himself wasn't that fortunate either, his win soon became double edged sword, he is simply too famous and the king felt jealous, he later killed by the king treacherous scheme.

Another tactic I wish they would include as a unit stance in Total War. Skirmish mode just doesn't cut it with horse archers, they keep getting stuck on each other when they try to run away.

What isn’t mentioned is that at Carrhae, the Persians came loaded with a shitload of arrows, making an almost endless supply. Crassus wasn’t prepared for this, and assumed they would run out in a few minutes. Instead, the Romans weathered a storm of arrows for HOURS, and survived. Absolutely brutal.

What is also interesting is that despite destroying a massive Roman army, the Persian general was executed as the King viewed him as too big of a threat following such a triumphant victory.

Two problems:

First you'll need an endless supply of arrows, otherwise you end up unarming yourself.

Second if the opponent has foot archers, the whole tactic falls apart. Foot archers can use stronger bows with more range.

So the cavarchers have to ride through arrows first before even starting their own attack. Plus the army standing still can carry better protection. And don't exhaust as fast as those who keep moving.

Very awesome video. Interesting enough, the two battles that were arguably the only defeats suffered by the United States during the American Mexican War were Dominguez Rancho or the Old Lady's Gun and San Pasqual. The former had the Californios using a single artillery piece (which had been saved by an old lady, hence the name of the battle) hauled by a small cart and horses which kept staying out of the range of the American marines and soldiers' muskets while providing a barrage of deadly fire. At San Pasqual the squadron of horsemen under Andres Pico were able to pull a feigned retreat that caused a significant contingent of the small American army to advance too far ahead, leaving an opening for Pico to exploit and cost the Americans their two pieces of artillery.

My favorite tactic to use. Why engage when you can whittle the enemy down till they become weak then send your heavy cavalry or infantry to finish them off

Hit and run was also used in modern times, for instance the Soviet forces under general Kirponos had (what remained of) their armoured units perform hit-and-run attacks after they had lost half of their tanks in the battle of Brody (also called the battle of Dubno, as it happened between Dubno and Brody).
