Here’s What The Little Half Moon Under Our Fingernails Means

The human body is truly remarkable, and that’s in no small part because of its extreme complexity. However, it’s sometimes easy to take it for granted. Your body is constantly giving you all sorts of signs—and some of them you might not even know about.

Take the lunula, for example. These are the pale, half-moon-shaped patches under our fingernails that most of us see (and ignore) every day. But did you know these features actually serve some very important purposes? You just might never look at your hands the same way again!

Many of us are aware of the half-moon-shaped patches under our fingernails, but we never really give them much thought. After all, why would we in the first place? They’re just part of our nail beds, right?

"The lunula is most noticeable on the thumb; however, not everyone's lunula is visible and often people don't have them at all. They are similar apart of the anatomy and are generally a genetic feature. As long as the nail has a nice pink to it, that means it is healthy"

Finger nail and health: If you have linula (crescent moon white part of your nail bed/root) usually most visible on your thumbs, it correlates to your health. Lack of it can mean anemia or lack of nutrition, if they are blue could mean diabetes, or red means heart disease. If you are missing linulae you could be suffering from trauma, anemia, malnutrition or depression...otherwise normal. I suggest you look at nail charts along with linula that would give you the better health picture.

I learned a long time ago what they mean. The half moon crescents mean your pituitary gland is working well. My pituitary had to be removed in 2003 because of a tumor. Now I have no half moons, but am on all pituitary replacement meds.
