Do you lie to yourself? Be... honest. This week we cover the psychology of self-deception.

Humans are complicated: a tangled web of amazing biology and bad behaviours. This illustrated field guide will equip you with the necessary tools to navigate the lying, jealous and judgmental tendencies of your fellow humans. This week we explore self-deception, the act of lying to yourself.

This episode was written by Bahar Gholipour and filmed by Dominique Taylor. Animations by Vanessa Hill.
And thank you to Mike Rugnetta for his help improving the audio.

Am I lying to myself? Yes, I said I will have one slice of pizza and I ate a large pizza instead :)

I have the exact opposite problem. I'm absolutely brutally honest with myself constantly (I'm naturally like this) and it makes communicating with others problematic because I can often spot when people are hiding behind self deception so I know they aren't coming at me from a place of genuine honest truth so I feel like I'm always having apples/oranges interactions. It's so frustrating to deal with people who can't separate emotion from objectivity and it's awful. I can get really heated about something, yet be 100% willing to change my view completely when given a more logical counterargument and in fact I love having my mind changed. My anger/elation/whatever emotion has little effect on how I treat incoming information. I know I think differently than everyone around me which makes it feel very isolating because I'm not prone to group think or getting caught up in too terribly much. My brain plays devils advocate with myself and everything around me literally constantly so I never get the "comfort" that can come with having a firm opinion on anything. That means I hold on to almost nothing as an "absolute truth" type deal and people can often actually get irritated if they feel strongly about a subject whereas I might argue both sides in succession in the same conversation and they don't know how to deal with someone who doesn't really have a stance. I really wish I knew other people who think like me. I'll see them on YouTube or hear them in a podcast and it's really reaffirming, but I have none around me and that sucks.

Hey Vanessa, thank you so much for this series. I'm learning a lot.
I'm finding quite interesting the ability to identify this behaviours in and around me.
You are really helping me to improve and to realise that one's attitude always shows more about themselves.
🙃😘

The deception of my heart is a force that I have to continually strive against.

I'm really loving this series, I've wanted to better myself for a long time now, to be more confident, more able to take my responsibilites and to be wiser, last episode made me think a lot about myself and the others and this too is highly connected to my thoughts about myself.

Keep up the good work Vanessa
(I'm a big fan of your work and I just hope you get to see this)

If I tell myself I'm lying, how do I know I'm telling the truth?

I tried deceiving myself but I can see the truth that I'm ugly.

Yeah but my problem has always been lying to myself by saying that I'm a failure, while ignoring all my good qualities.

Yeah, I'm always trying to justify things, which can basically be lies.

I wonder if the videos revealed that Mark was neither a very good or bad person, but instead just unremarkable.
