I was introduced to it in New Zealand in a hostel with many Argentinians and people from Chile. They didnt know me and just invited me to some Mate and dice games, had it every morning since. Miss those times

Love my Yerba even though I dont use this traditional method, I just make it as a regular tea in a teapot and strain it. Gives me shit ton of energy, but I have adhd so I cannot calm down.

It's amazing how there are similarities between cultures. In the Middle East, people also drank herbal tea for centuries before tea from India reached that area. When I was in Syria, I had what they called shia shifah apparently been brank since before the romans arrived.

It is a trend, and it is also traditional. It is traditional when you genuinely enjoy it for what it is and what it gives you. It is a trend, when it becomes popularized into the cool new thing by those outside of its traditional consumption that you have to try for yourself to be cool too. They may enjoy it, but they likely won't stick with it.

Just because it is trendy right now with others in the popular mainstream, does not detract its significance to you whom has enjoyed it genuinely, nor to the new ones whom find their way to it thanks to the trend, and stay with it. It can be more than one thing
