Hyundai Ioniq 5 2025 review: More driving range, sporty N Line pack for updated Tesla Model Y rival!

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has just burst onto the fully electric vehicle (EV) scene, bringing with it a midlife facelift that includes larger battery options (now up to 84kWh) that enables a longer driving range (now up to 570km). Better yet, a sporty N Line option package has finally been added.

As a result, the new Ioniq 5 has become a more competitive rival for the best-selling Tesla Model Y and other zero-emissions mid-size SUVs, including the mechanically related Kia EV6 as well as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, among others.

I like Hyundai but can’t see the need for cars with exceptional performance when speed limits are not at 100 mph. Yes is quick but people don’t need it. It’s just for those with a big ego

Ioniq 5 is a great car in the cheaper trims, but this top option isn’t worth it. Ill stick to my GV60, which for <20k more came with more power more luxury, free servicing, free home charger, concierge service, and over the air updates free too.

from my perspective every EV is better than it's equivalent Tesla in one critical area: user interface. tesla eliminating nearly all physical controls in favor of embedded menus on a tablet is a no-go for me. It overrides any benefits they may or may not have in efficiency, handling, power, whatever. this is not just me being an old-timer, there's a reason why intentionally placed knobs and buttons, and dashboards/HUDs are superior. They can work with muscle memory and sightlines to keep drivers attention on the road at all times.

I think nails already in the coffin for Hyundai’s EVs in Aus - they’re probably never going to sell well down under, reason being:

BYD Seal Performance (0-100 in 3.8s): $71k drive away,
Tesla Model 3 Performance (0-100 in 3.1s): $89k drive away,
Volvo EX30 Twin Motor (0-100 in 3.6s): $81k drive away
MG4 XPower (0-100 in 3.8s): $59k drive away
Tesla Model Y Performance (0-100 3.7s): $91k driveway away.

Add to that Zeekr, XPeng and other brands are all launching offerings in the next 1-2 years in Aus.

Why would I drop $100k+ on an “N-Line” or “N” EV from Hyundai, when I can get close to or better performance for $40k-$56k less? 😐.

Please, please all car reviewers, talk about whether the car has an app and its capabilities and whether it is equipped for OTA software updates. Hyundai and Kia have been seriously deficient here in the past at least and particularly for the Aussie market. All EVs at this end of the market should have these features. $25k more than a Long Range Model Y which is faster, more efficient, longer range, etc. No wonder they sell so poorly.
