The Hyundai Ioniq 5 emerged as one of the initial electric vehicles to incorporate an 800V battery system. This innovation made it a cost-effective electric crossover SUV capable of utilizing fast-charging stations, such as the 350-kW ones at select Electrify America locations.

However, being a first-generation model, the Ioniq 5 encountered its share of challenges. Issues with the 12V batteries were reported, along with difficulties during level 2 charging sessions, often due to overheating. The root cause was identified as failures in the integrated charging control unit, prompting a reduction in charging speeds. Additionally, a significant number of vehicles experienced a loss of motive power, triggering a federal investigation. Repair efforts were further complicated by delayed parts shipments and Hyundai's delays in providing necessary documentation.

Originally launched with two battery capacities, 58-kWh and 72.6-kWh, the Ioniq 5 saw an upgrade to a 77.4 kWh battery in late 2022. These capacities are all gross measurements.

The updated Ioniq 5 models, soon to be available, boast an 84-kWh battery, expected to extend the driving range by approximately 19 miles (30 kilometers), allowing for a total range of 301 miles (484 kilometers) under optimal conditions, without altering the charging speed.

A notable addition is the rear windshield wiper, hidden beneath the new rear spoiler, eliminating the need for frequent application of anti-rain solutions. The 2025 model also introduces physical controls for seat heating and ventilation, as well as for the heated steering wheel, reflecting Hyundai's attention to consumer feedback. Design cues from the Ioniq 6 are evident in the updated steering wheel, which features organized shortcut buttons.

Concerns remain about the battery protection panel, a known weak spot that could lead to expensive repairs.

The interior sees enhancements such as volume knobs, new infotainment and instrument panel bezels, wireless compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a redesigned A/C panel.

While some regions will receive digital side mirror cameras, it's unlikely these will be included in models destined for the U.S., despite their superior visibility in adverse conditions.

Exterior updates include new LED indicators for charging status, a more pronounced front LED strip, sleeker air intakes and radars, new wheel styles, colors, and technological upgrades like enhanced cameras, a better wireless charging pad, and a redesigned glove compartment.

Hyundai has made mechanical adjustments, like new shock absorbers, to increase cabin quietness and added more safety features, including easy-to-use buttons for folding the second row of seats.

The 2025 Ioniq 5 also focuses on safety, with stronger front and rear doors and B-pillars, alongside new airbags.

The introduction of the Ioniq 5 N Line marks the model's venture into a more stylish and sporty domain, though it might compromise comfort and range for larger wheels and aesthetic enhancements.

The refreshed Ioniq 5 is already available in South Korea, with a global rollout planned throughout 2024. This iteration represents Hyundai's commitment to customer feedback and concludes the model's development on the E-GMP platform. The next generation will transition to the Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) platform, promising advancements like LFP batteries and reduced wiring.

The Petrol Heads out there may think that black instrument panel bezels are more aggressive suiting their personality but the original white bezels are far more attractive, elegant and give a greater sense of spaciousness and luxury. The change to black is a SERIOUS DOWNGRADE and is the reason I will not be changing my 2023 model for a 2025 model. Please put the white bezels back Hyundai!
