Hyundai's 2025 Ioniq 5 Gets Some Small Changes And One BIG Change: Native Tesla Charging!!!

OK, there's more to the 2025 than just the J3400/NACS port, there's also this new XRT trim that Hyundai brought along for us to look at. Don't think of it as a competitor to the upcoming Rivian R2 or R3, but it is a nod to the expansion of EVs from road-warrior only to something designed for country dwelling. Also: it gets a rear wiper AND a tax credit. Yep, the 2025 Ioniq 5 will be built in the USA which should net it 1/2 the tax credit at that start and the full $7500 when full battery production moves to Georgia a little later in 2025. All models also get new batteries with a touch more capacity (63 kWh or 84 kWh) which should yield a bit more range than before. The big pack is one you’ve seen before since it’s the same one in last year!s Ioniq 5N.

Hyundai has confirmed that 2025s will get Supercharger access to 17, 000 stations. Exact timing is unclear, but they said it will be basically right when they start sale at the end of the year

Apple CP/Android Auto with NACS might tempt me to change from model Y.

First you had the Ioniq 5 N, now you have this? Seems like Hyundai is creating EVs that Subaru should have been.

Leaving aside the charging complications and what I perceive to be the uselessness of this particular trim, the addition of physical buttons for the seat heating/cooling and other functions is the biggest improvement here! The more things they bring out from under endless screen menus, the better.

The ground clearance will be a benefit to drivers in central Oregon. It's super helpful on rutted dirt roads, trail heads or just deep snow.

The XRT will be popular in Washington. We have very good charging infrastructure, and a ton of forest service roads that don't need much more than this for ground clearance. I still think the R3X has its place in the market, when the XRT only has the same ground clearance as a Solterra though.

The XRT should be very popular in Chicago!

I feel like the XRT was thrown together as a response to Rivian's R2 and R3.

Nice! For the off-roading portion, I think they should have done more. Interesting to see the NACS connector. The public infrastructure needs to catch up soon.

I'm most surprised that they're keeping the magnetic panel on the dash. XRT could really use some weatherized floor mats.

The adapter mess seems less of a headache than the plug and charge protocol. Having to initiate charging through a separate app, let alone navigating to one with dynamic vacancy info, if a huge obstacle that will put off a lot of people.

Dont care about the N or WRT.... GIVE ME THE REGULAR LIMITED IONIQ 5.

Oh the cruel irony! You finally get a NACS plug and the reward for that, you get to carry an adapter. But hurrah and thank you Hyundai for being the first to switch.

Finally, the EV I’ve been waiting for. The NACS port is a game changer!

Love these upgrades. Seriously considering regular Ionic 5 for my next car

I think being a 2023 SEL owner will actually work out better for me. I keep CCS for 350w chargers and then in Q1 of 2015 should be able to use an adapter for superchargers if needed. This seems like a way better option than native NACS for now. And I don’t need an adapter for my home charger.

I’d imagine Hyundai will be shipping their EVs with the CCS/J3400 adapters since that’s the only way they’d be able to achieve the advertised charging speeds.

The confusing thing to me is that they are shipping with the J3400 plug, but it’s on the right rear of the car. That means they’re still going to struggle to use a supercharger since those are _only_ designed for cars with the plug on the left rear or right front of the car. I used my old Ioniq5 on a magic dock supercharger, and it’s impossible to park in the correct spot and have the cable reach the charging inlet. You have to park in the wrong spot, blocking access to 2 superchargers (which makes you _very_ popular with the Tesla drivers) The new ioniq5, despite having the correct plug for superchargers, is still going to have the same issue. Totally baffled why they changed the plug but not the location of it.

Has Hyundai confirmed that they won't be supporting a split pack configuration for faster 400V charging? I figured that change would be slipped in with the change to NACS port. If they haven't officially said anything yet, then it could still happen...

This looks great. The permanent tow hooks would suit the Cybertruck more though probably.

Did they add a steel bash plate under it to protect the battery? If not, i forsee a lot of warranty denials when people bash the battery plate on rocks and cause damage to the electrical system. Still, very cool to see how much they are doing with the ionic 5.
