Great interview! Thx.
My wife had schizophrenia, treated only by drugs, for over 35 years. She lived constantly with delusions. Over 15 different drugs were used to treat her over those years. The "side-effects" were horrible as anyone knows whose been on these medications. Her weight was unmanageable. She was a walking zombie. Terrible gut issues. Couldn't read or concentrate. And so on.
By God's help, we stumbled across a video on YouTube of Dr Palmer being interviewed by Dr Brett Sher. Well after seeing that we did a lot more research and decided to cut out the junk food and high sugar and just eat whole non-starchy foods. The results were dramatic. After 6-8 weeks she no longer had any delusions. And there were many other improvements.
It's been 7 months, her psychiatrist has reduced her medication by 3/4. He has been over the moon watching her changes. He could not be happier. She has lost 13 kg (26lbs). No one sold us anything. It was just changing what we ate, from highly processed foods to whole foods like our grandparents ate.
For those interested, the following are some of the most helpful and informative videos we have seen in educating ourselves. But do your own research and chat with your Dr.
Some of the following are directly related to mental health and some to general health.

This video is a short (15min) speech from a woman who is detailing her experience with her son who had major psychoses and the help he got from the Ketogenic (Keto) diet.
Very interesting.

I have bipolar and I eat paleo and take minimal meds. Before I started the diet I was on a mood stabilizer, an antipsychotic and an antidepressant and still had issues. I am religious about my diet at this point.

Thank you. This is one of the rare times things don't sound absolutely bleak. This gives a tiny bit of hope and that is priceless

Hey Lauren, it would be nice if you could do an interview with someone who's used this intervention and ideally their psychiatrist too, as a primer for people to share with their practitioners. I'm sure anyone who hears about the intervention would get excited, but of course there's going to be skepticism especially when the biggest advocate has a book to sell! If it works, it needs to be propagated responsibly and quickly, and additional voices would definitely help with that!

I got a new horse 🐴 that was a danger to himself and others - would get a stressed look to his eyes and just run blindly in a panic 🐎 and crash into fences etc. 😢 a neighbour suggested taking oats oat of his diet. Instantly my horse became kind, calm and sensible 🎉😅. Diet does affect mental health in horses for sure. Ask your veterinarian 😊

I love Dr. Palmer and wish there were many more doctors like him. It's amazing that most doctors and psychiatrists have not heard of this metabolic therapy for mental illness. My loved one was inpatient at McLean Hospital, where Dr. Palmer is affiliated with, and even the doctors there had not heard of this. Every doctor that we have dealt with thinks this is anecdotal and are dismissive. How is it that they have spent years in med school yet don't believe in science? How is it that non-medically trained people know more than doctors? Why are they in this field if they don't truly want to help and heal people?

Why aren't more doctors willing to try this with patients? Some of my family has suffered from this illness for a long time. I hope this information can help them improve their mental and physical well being. Thank you for covering this topic. It is uplifting to know others have been able to overcome this horrible illness.

I'm a therapist who talks a lot about diet, I'm a nutrition coach and believe all therapists should be trained in this as well. It's so imperative we discuss this in terms of mental health.

I can attest that keto helps a lot with my depression and schizophrenia-like negative symptoms. Just jumping into it now after a few months' pause. Not sure if it is long-term sustainable but it is good to have that option.

Hopefully dr palmer's research will help a lot of people. There's likely multiple etiologies of schizophrenia (more than one cause) but clearly his area of research can "cure" at least some people who are suffering, just based on all the research I was familiar with before hearing about him. Really unfortunate that more investigation hadn't occurred since the first case reports back in the 1800s, but then again, antipsychotics saw steady improvements over the years so they were seen as an eventual permanent solution. More research, more interventions, more is better!
