Let’s talk about the benefits of keto for the kidneys.

High insulin and high glucose create oxidative damage to four tissues:
1. The brain and nerves
2. The heart and vessels
3. The eyes
4. The kidneys

An interesting study done on mice over eight weeks showed a complete reversal of the albumin/creatine ratio using the ketogenic diet. Over eight weeks, there was also a partial recovery of kidney damage.

The ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, can provide an alternative fuel for the kidneys and has other interesting benefits for the kidneys, including reducing oxidative stress. Keto may be able to counter the damage and destruction of a high-carb diet and is very therapeutic for the kidneys.

If a person has stage five kidney disease or end-stage renal failure, the kidneys can no longer filter the blood. At this stage, you need to check with your doctor before taking potassium.

However, before this stage, you may be able to take potassium to help protect the kidneys against damage. The body needs 4700 mg of potassium every day.

Taking certain oral amino acids may be beneficial to help slow down the progression of kidney problems. A nutrient-dense low-carb diet is also essential. Talk to your doctor about any new supplements or diet changes.

I can vouch for this.... I’ve been a kidney patient for 10 years. My autoimmune system is attacking the filters in my kidneys (fsgs). When diagnosed my kidney function (gfr) was 17%. With plasma exchange and paleo diet they stabilised between 38 and 42%. Now on keto for 18 months and they are working between 55 and 60%. I’m very happy. Have not cheated once and have lost 30kg😀🐨

Among other ailments I had stage 3 kidney disease. The keto diet completely reversed it and my Nephrologist was amazed.

Before starting keto my GFR was 48. After only 2 months on keto my GFR came up to 60! So yes, keto has definitely improved my kidney function!

This has been my experience. After being diagnosed with T2D 4yrs ago, I went on a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. This reversed my T2D and brought me into a normal A1C level, but it also reversed my aluminum/creatine ratios. Almost, very close to being in the normal range. My doctor couldn’t believe my results. He said, you reversed damage and are actually healing at a cellular level.

I was stage five renal failure. My energy level was non exinsistant. My back was in constant pain. My weight and blood pressure was through the roof. The doctors could not control my blood pressure. So I took it upon myself to start riding my spin bike 🚴four days a week for one hour each day. And monitor what I would eat more closely. So I went from 221lbs down to 199lbs and counting. As I would loose weight my blood pressure normalize. And by eating the one meal a day and drinking plenty of water my body stabilized itself. I am going to continue to loose weight until my body says I’m at the correct weight for my height. I still have some of the symptoms but I’m not hooked up to some machine and or dead. So I’m glad I took it up too look after my own health. Not a big fan of the doctors or big Pharma.

My dad has reversed kidney damage and has blood work to prove it. Took many years and he was just about at the point of needing dialysis! It can be done!

I was diagnosed with CKD Stage 5 (GFR 13) last November and have used diet and healthy lifestyle changes to get me up to stage 3. My doctors then allowed me to try a 45-day Ketogenic Diet. I just got my labs and most look good (everything is within the standard range) - with the exception of my BUN and Creatinine increasing slighting while on keto. I lot a lot - I mean a LOT - of weight and feel amazing, lots of energy. I'm tweaking my Keto diet this week and will get new labs in a month. I didn't see the partial reversal of damage you mention, but with less animal protein (more non-soy plant-based protein) I am expecting my Creatinine and BUN to lower, bringing up my GFR. My doctor kept my potassium at under 2700mg a day since I was in Stage 3b, and I use daily Intermittent Fasting (6pm to Noon).

Would be great if you dedicate a separate video on edemas exactly like the one (it was a picture) you showed in this video. These are very common I believe and can be caused by malfunction in different areas of body, might be the liver, might be the kidneys, might be the heart. Very complicated stuff, but very common and therefore with big interest attached to it. Cheers, doc )

Thank you. My 11 month old was diagnosed with hydronephrosis while in utero. We have started him on solids but I am cautious of what to feed him. He consumes mostly breastmilk from me and I AM following a healthy keto diet. Any tips or any other suggestions for our situation?
