When Is The Best Time To Prune?✂️

The thing people seem to be most afraid of is killing their plants. I get this question ALL the time. I think people are potentially worried about the wrong thing because the plants are actually really hard to kill by pruning. What I actually worry about is people under-watering their plants, which really does lead to their untimely death. And invasive plants😭.

If you’re in a colder climate it really may be time to put away those loppers and hand pruners but you can still potentially do small maintenance cuts like removing dead or broken branches, depending on where you live. Having said that, I worked with a client last year at this time (December 3rd) and we cut back a row of azaleas and they bounced back beautifully in the spring and looked amazing in the summer so the message here is that plants are very resilient and they want to live. If you’re not sure whether your climate is too cold then just wait until March or April.

I encourage everyone to take what may feel like a risk and just get out there and prune something. Anything. The best way to learn is to do it. If you do something that doesn’t look great, who cares? Just wait it out and keep at it. If you’re really worried about it, just do a small amount and see how it goes. Generally, new growth appears on shrubs within a few weeks.

Given how overgrown some people’s plants can get, I am not joking about the plant carnage. Be prepared!🤣✂️
