Hi Mark, I'd love to see something on the biggest mistakes you made starting out? You're always pretty honest anyway, would love to know what the main things to avoid are.

I learned something interesting with my cucumbers during the summer. The cucumbers would wilt in the hot day and I did some research and discovered that plants will wilt their leaves to decrease the surface area exposed to the sun

I use drip irrigation, put a .5-1 gph dripper at every plant location and set it for 20 minutes every 12 hours. Love it, it's a perfect amount where I don't worry about turning it off when it rains (unless it's an unseasonable event). Sure it requires a bit of work installing it every season but once you get the fundamentals down it's cheap and effective. The water penetrates nicely so evaporation is a very low impact, if you have a sun shade or mulch it's nearly non existent

In the summer dad would have me put holes in the bottom of plastic milk jugs (needed screw tops for this), fill them with water and place them out in the garden. As the day heated up the water would warm up and push out through the holes water the plants without getting the leaves wet.

As a side note dad would always talk about the time he spent in Australia fondly. Have a great day and keep the videos coming.

Very good, I like this. On my raised beds I have drip irrigation and I can do the finger test and set each bed for length of time and # of days per week. So much easier than running a hose out. I get my exercise by walking and finger testing anyway.:) I also think the drip (along with good mulch) reduces weeds and the amount of water I use and I can tell you here in 9b Sacramento we are in a deep drought with an El Nino winter coming (El Nino means much less rainfall than usual) Thanks Mark, great vids.

As a northern hemispherer who just came out of the hot, hot summer (Zone 9), your summer reminds me of mine as you head into yours, haha. I have found the secret to successful gardening in my climate is 1) pick heat loving plants e.g. I have a butternut squash that thrives in our summers along with eggplant, peppers, pineapple, watermelon, etc. 2) use hugelculture beds to help out with plants' water needs 3) try to create some shade for your plants during the afternoon like planting a garden on the east side of a fence line, tree line, structure, etc. and 4) just understand that plants will look sad in the hottest part of the day only to rebound once the sun goes down.

I live in Costa Rica and november marks the beginning of the windy/dry/sunny season so this helped me a lot. We normally don’t have any rain until April
