I have never had oil dilution. All I do is let the idle settle down to 1000 RPMs before I start driving. 3-5min of waiting. Too many people get in there car, start it up, and drive immediately down the highway.

I have a Honda Accord 2014 2.4L. I believe that Hondas are great cars, gas economy and they last long.

Have a 2015. 152k trouble free mile. Not a single CEL ever. Only thing ever had to replace was the PCV at 100k miles. Still drives great to this day.

I did a lot of research before I bought my 2023 1.5l Honda accord. Especially after years of seeing Scotty’s videos warning us about the 1.5l Honda engines. They’re not HORRIBLE their other engines are just better.

I live in Arizona and the 1.5l engines here don’t suffer as much from the oil dilution as the 1.5l engines in colder states. Engines warm up fast here and burn off the extra fuel. The oil dilution is mainly caused when people drive short trips and don’t warm up their engines all the way. it’s more common in cold climates as I mentioned.

Also Honda made a lot of mechanical and software updates for the 2023 accord 1.5l to avoid the dilution problem.

Please understand that ALL GDI engines have some sort of slight oil dilution. Honda engineers designed the 1.5l with that in mind. What Scotty is referring to here is excessive oil dilution that Honda did not account for that can wear out your engine faster and cause mechanical problems.

If you have a 1.5l Honda engine then change your oil more frequently than you would in a 2.0 or 2.4 earth dreams engine. Keep your coolant extremely clean. Just be super proactive on the maintenance. Hondas can last forever but you can’t neglect them. I had a 2.0 2018 Honda Civic and I loved that engine so much I made sure to buy a 2024 HRV that also had to 2.0 non turbo engine.

However I went back a month after buying the 2024 HRV and decided I wanted to also buy an accord. I didn’t want a hybrid so my only option was the 1.5l turbo. Please do not buy a 1.5l turbo if you do not take ultra care of your car. I will be changing the oil in my 1.5l accord every 3k miles and every 5k miles in my 2.0l HRV.

Honda 2.4L is probably one of the best 4 cylinders

I had a 2.4 litre 2017 accord I could smell gasoline that time, now I have 2020 honda accord 1.5t. I can still smell gasoline. Nothing has changed since. But I fully agree with scotty...2.4 litre is the best engine that honda makes.

Hey Scotty. I have a 2014 altima. It feels brand new to be honest. It’s the SV model. It’s all maintained and no problems. Accident free as well. It’s also very clean. My old car tho a 2013 Impala it was falling apart at around 100k miles. I cant describe how bad my old car was. When I bought this car some months ago, it only had 46k. Is it great????

I have a 2020 crv with the 1.5 turbo. Only 5, 000 miles. So far zero issues with gas smell or dilution. We did the research before we bought it. We dont drive it short trips and get it out on the highway. It's the smoothest 4 cylinder I have ever owned. Any small displacement engine with direct Injection will dilute the oil if it is not properly warmed up and driven long distances. I had a 2017 civic with the n/a 2.0 and the last few months I owned it I only drove short distances and I had oil dilution problems. Its not just the turbo causing these issues like scotty says.

I disagree with Scotty on this one, to a certain degree.

Yes, there are over a million L15B7s on Accords, Civics, and CRVs. But to be fair, the dilution issue is somewhat overblown. This only happens in rare circumstances where the engine doesn’t reach sufficient operating temps and cannot burn off excess fuel vapors. Over time it collects in the sump and slowly dilutes the oil over thousands of miles. But even in a majority of worst case scenarios, the maintenance minder intervenes well before excess dilution becomes problematic. The exception being excessive short trips in extremely cold climates. This has been backed by several hundred UOAs from 1.5T owners under a variety of operating conditions.

Honda has addressed the “fringe” scenarios through a software update that limits the operation of the heater and related accessories following a cold startup. This allows the engine to reach operating temps much sooner, which in turns burns off any excess fuel. If you have a 17-20 1.5T and live anywhere where temps fall below 30*, chances are you’re covered under the extended 7 yr/unlimited mile warranty. I’ve yet to hear of any 1.5T owners requesting coverage due to valve lash, ring/sleeve wear, or similar issues stemming from excessive dilution.

I kind of lucked out and got a 17 accord coupe. Same engine and no turbo. Runs great

My mom has a 2.4l 2015 honda accord. Valve cover gasket starting leaking, very minimal amount but needs changed nevertheless. 91, 000 miles

My 2018 CRV with the turbo GDI engine has never had oil dilution. I do drive 8 miles at Interstate speeds to and from work each day. I followed the coolant temperatures with my Bluedriver OBD2 reader before and after the software update in zero weather. Before the update, the temperature never reached 140 degrees. After the update, it reached 165. Same trip and weather.

I did look at automotive engineer's posts. They felt the problem of dilution was the engine not reaching a temperature high enough to vaporize the gas that blow byes the cold rings on every engine. GDI and turbo increases that amount. But if the engine reaches operating temperature, the gasoline vaporizes and does not dilute the oil.

If you drive short distances and do not allow the gasoline to revaporize, it will dilute the gasoline. And when it is around zero, this engine does not get very hot.
