Dr. K is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and co-founder of Healthy Gamer. He covers topics that plague people of the internet such as anxiety, depression, shame, failure, motivation, self-esteem, and more. In this video, he covers how failure is cyclical when people push themselves or are "moving the goalposts". Dr. K covers the cognitive trap of cyclical failure and covers how to get out of failure that repeats over and over. People frequently go on diets, push themselves too hard, and then crash and burn.

Avoid moving the goalposts, avoid cyclical failure.

"We overestimate what we can achieve in a day, but underestimate what we can achieve in a year."
I don't know who said that but it's in my brain

"You don't let yourself sit with that success."
This one got me.

I cried watching this. Been talking about this with my therapist a lot recently. Feeling like a failure is unbearable at times. Thanks for the inspiration doc.

Youtube should seriously promote you more. This is such a positive channel with a for the most part positive and well thought out audience who treats every guest with kindness and adoration regardless of the topic.

This is EXTREMELY helpful. I'm not a "gamer" nor someone who's in touch with the whole streaming community, but I really do enjoy watching the Healthy Gamer streams every time. Through that itself, I know what I should/shouldn't do...but it's easy to forget to apply the advice Dr. K gives to the guests. This felt direct, to the point, and targeted towards the listener. Very easy to digest, and bookmarkable (I can save it and view it any time I need to just hear those words). I really do appreciate this type of content!

"The second you expect yourself to be perfect everyday. The second you expect more of you're capable of..."
That hit the mark perfectly.

i dont know what to say. i failed uni with 24ish. sunk in a big black hole, got a job with 26 that had me study engineering at a college. i always felt i had to compensate for failing. i always set impossible goals and then didnt even had the confidence to pursue them. i did martial arts for years, but there was a time i wanted to much perfection from myself that i never had the confidence to take a test for the next belt. i got stuck for 3 years on one belt, 3 years on the next one. always until my trainers forced me to take the test. but i always had so high goals and standards for myself, that i always set myself up for failure even harder. this segment hit home hard Dr.K. Thank you for all you do.

Man, I was feeling like a massive failure for quite a while. In my mind, I kept pestering myself unconsciously "What have you achieved in life so far? You should feel ashamed!". This sort of helped me clear that a bit.

This channel is literally saving my life (I’m not suicidal) but holy shit dude you are speaking to me and my soul like no one else could. Everything you say I relate to. You make me feel understood and not alone. It’s so uplifting

The past few days I have been cleaning my room (it's been a mess for months) and I felt really good about it. Today I didn't have the motivation to continue on my room and I was starting to feel like a failure, but that isn't true; yesterday was just abnormally successful. I just have to remind myself that I am where I am, and that's ok. This video helped me with that.

Really like the new initiative from the channel of trying to make shorter mini lecture videos. A lot of people who found your channel on youtube might not have time to sit through hours worth of vods and interviews. These are extremely helpful, thank you! Hope to see more like this.

"Sometimes you'll fail and sometimes you'll succeed". To realize that I don't have to be perfect in order to not feel like a failure was such an overwhelmingly relieving realization that I started bawling 😭 Thank you Dr. K for changing my perspective. Also, I really like the new format and I'm hoping to see more content on how to build true confidence vs. Ego.

17 seconds in and I am crying for some reason.
I am okay, it's just not that common to see someone interested and invested in helping people.

Not gonna lie. I took notes on this as if it was a college lecture.

Michael Pierre White (chef that trained Gordon Ramsay) said something profound that I think can relate to shifting our thinking about success and not feeling overwhelmed. He says "perfection is a lot of little things done well."

So, when we take one step at a time, tackle each issue we have in a small way and let that become habit, then eventually we have a bunch of small positive habits that contribute to the bigger picture.
