MicroNugget: What is the ASA Virtual Firewall?

In this video, Keith Barker covers ASA virtual firewalls. Say you've got multiple VLANs behind one physical ASA and the departments that operate those VLANs want to configure their own firewall policies. With a virtual ASA, you can make sure they don't cause harm to one another's networks.

Running multiple VLANs behind a single physical ASA works well up until the point that users of each VLAN want to make their own changes to access lists, modular policy framework and NAT.

To give each VLAN control of its firewall settings but still keep them on the same physical ASA, you'll need to create a virtual firewall. These work in much the same way as a virtualized PC: the physical ASA boots from a configuration file that instructs it to spin up contexts — or virtual instances of a firewall.

Those contexts boot from their own files, and those files can be configured from the command line, ASDM or a combination of both. Watch Keith illustrate how to think with virtual firewalls and how to configure their settings.
