MicroNugget: How to Upgrade ASA

There are different approaches to upgrading your ASA, and Michael's done most of them — he's had the headaches to prove it. Follow along and see the single safest approach: it's the method that ensures your access to your ASA through ASDM doesn't get interrupted. It starts when you go to Cisco's website to download your ASA binary — be sure to download the most recent ASDM image as well.

With the ASDM image in hand, upgrade it first — if you were to update the ASA first through the older ASDM tools and then try to gain access with its new binary, the ASDM wouldn't be able to manage the device. So follow along with Michael and see how to upgrade both softwares, in the right order, to keep your ASA manageable with your ASDM.
