In this video, Keith Barker covers the two specific steps needed to tell the ASA that you want to start authenticating VPN users using a centralized AAA server. Keith will explain why this action is necessary and then walk you through how to implement it.

When you’re building a VPN connection to a gateway, there are at least two different places where you can store the username and password. You can store it locally, which means on the ASA itself, or you can store it on a centralized server, such as Cisco’s ACS server or some other AAA server.

When a user attempts to connect to the ASA and enters his password, the ASA can contact the AAA server and verify that the username and password are correct. This authenticates the user and grants him access. The process is efficient and scalable, and Keith will demonstrate how to set it up.
