I was diagnosed with Parkinson's about three years ago so decided to make the most of my muscles while I could. I'm now almost 70 and am in the best physical condition of my life. I only spend about 10 minutes a day with some dumbells but the result is that my muscle-mass has increased significantly. This has already proven to be incredibly valuable because I have had several falls that I'm sure would have broken bones if my shoulders weren't so nicely protected by my delts. I'm no body-builder but my biceps went from 13 inches to almost 15 inches and now I can do 40 push-ups without taking a rest.

Life is what you make it and I'm determined to put up as much of a fight as I can. It's never too late to put on some muscle and improve your general physical condition and it really doesn't require a gym membership or hours of hard slog. Remember, the lower your starting point the faster you'll see improvements so I advise everyone to spend the few minutes it requires to mitigate the effects of sarcopenia.

My Parkinson's symptoms have also slowed in their progression as a result of this exercise and it may simply be placebo but I've read studies that associate creatine monohydrate with improvements in cognitive performance and parkinson's symptoms so I also take 5g of that per day.

Woohoo! Yeah! Get in! Woohoo! Yeah!
I’m 52 and I started weight training when I was 15. I haven’t always done it but I’m really into it again. I’ve spent the last 3 years building a home gym. I love watching videos about how to beat sarcopenia. I’ll hopefully be working out the rest of my life. I have this crazy goal to work out on my hundredth birthday 🎉

For older people training - you need knowledge, resistance training and on-going motivation - your video hits the mark perfectly.

I'm 62 years old, and I'm at the gym at 4:30 a.m. 4 days a week. I absolutely love it. I've been doing it for one year. There are times I see myself stronger than my much younger counterparts. Thank you for posting this video. I'm even more encouraged!

78 year old male here. i have been doing CrossFit sine I was 70. Yes it works to ensure you are functionally fit. I have no life threatening health issue and work out up to almost max HR. Just completed the CrossFit open for the first time. I have fallen several times and just roll with it and get up. My workouts are always very intense. Quality of life is much better, i/ do all the barbell lifts etc.

Im 56, and I've boxed for 39 years. I've been vegetarian for 10 years which has helped my joints. I drink 4 Litres of water a day, and I do high rep weight and bands training. My stomach is flat, my shoulders are wide and my arms. Legs and chest are solid.

I do 8-10 x 3 minute rounds 4-5 days a week of boxing. Followed by muscle resistance training. I feel as I did when I was 25, and people are stunned when I tell them Im 56. I rarely get ill, and when I do, I recover quickly. Healthy diet and exercise keeps me forever young.

I'm 65 and I can vouch for all thr claims you're making. You make a compelling case, laden with emotion and information, for resistance training. This needs to be shared with all humanity! Thanks truckloads for everything you're doing. I practice lifestyle medicine in bangalore. Educating people is so frustrating but the show must go on. You motivate me like no other.

Spot on. I have been recommending this for decades. I am always trying to educate my uni students on the importance of RT from an early age and the importance of being consistent with it throughout their life. Unfortunately, most don't listen and think they are immortal lol.

I started RT at 14 and am now 55. I am pretty proud of my strength and have no intention of ever stopping. When my mother was my age she was immobile and frail. That's my motivation to never stop. Ppl think I love it, but I don't anymore. It's damn hard. But I don't have to LIKE it.... I just have to DO it, so it's more about building healthy habits. Another great video from you. Thank you.

Not to mention the mental health benefits of resistance training. Going from squatting an empty barbell to 100kg does so much for your confidence.

I agree. I believe resistance training is the fountain of youth. Not just going into the gym and doing a bunch of isolation exercises, but building/maintaining strength with compound lifts…and limiting or not eating processed foods.

I'm the only physician I know that pushes exercise as the primary medicine. Not just lifestyle but even in intervention.

Beautifully explained and absolutely spot-on! I would add that a good quality, high protein diet would also benefit each person enormously, from all the extra load that the body is being asked to perform. Ditto for good quality sleep, as this is where your body will be doing its repairing.

Eat well, train well, rest well is the power pyramid for a healthy life imho...

Thanks so much for this video. I had to have a hysterectomy at 29 and 22 years later I have been diagnosed with osteopenia. I have been exercising for the better part of 26 years but always focused on cardio. I’m now finding out from videos like yours and my doctor that I should probably focus a little more on weight training.

Great video. I have been strength for a while and I was doing ok. But I started lifting heavy because I was in a plateau. Past month I have seen so much changes in my body. Love strength training!!
