How can I reduce the discomfort from Braxton Hicks contractions?

Some women start to feel irregular tightening and pressure during their pregnancy and use the term Braxton Hicks to describe the discomfort they're feeling. I don't really like this term because I think that some women write the pains that they're having off as Braxton Hicks and don't get checked out when in reality they should be checked out. Here are some basic principles of labor. The definition of labor is cervical change. When you're full term and having contractions it's an exciting thing. I always tell my patients at the hospital, no pain no gain. Labor and delivery is the one place at the hospital where if you're experiencing pain it's actually a good thing. We just want to control it if that's your goal. But when you're pre-term that's a totally different story. If you start to have any signs of pre-term labor which include lower abdominal cramping, lower back ache, an increase in vaginal discharge, any spotting or leaking of fluid, then it's best to go to the hospital and get checked out. The nurses can do some tests to determine if what you're experiencing, if they're actually contractions or not and if they're actually causing your cervix to change, which is the definition of labor. Now we don't want your cervix to change so in most cases we can find out if you're contracting, stop your contractions and send you on to have a happy, healthy, full term pregnancy. There are those cases that require further terminate like hospitalization, medications, those sorts of things. We want you to come in sooner rather than later so that we can prevent your cervix from changing and delivering a pre-term baby. Overall my motto is always when it doubt get checked out. Go to the hospital if you're experiencing persistent pains that are getting worse in intensity and frequency and they can decide there if further intervention is necessary. Good luck with everything and if you have any other questions for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page and recommend us to your friends and family too.

(Part 1 of 4) Hello Sammie! It’s Nurse Dani. Braxton Hicks contractions are ones that are very irregular and instead of being painful, they’re uncomfortable. You’re able to continue on with your activities and don’t really have to stop and focus or breath through them. The fact that you’re nearing 37 weeks is VERY reassuring because that means that the contractions you were having weren’t enough to change your cervix, which is the true definition of labor. (Part 3 of 4) But since you’re 37 weeks, the contractions you’re having will hopefully just prep your body for labor. Once you’re 37 weeks, it’s time to go to the hospital if you have contractions that are 3-5 minutes apart and hurting, or you’re bleeding vaginally, leaking fluid, or feeling your baby move less than usual. If you have any more specific questions about your situation, don’t hesitate to ask your OB provider. (Continued -->)

(Part 2 of 4) Many women think that if they’re contracting, they’re in labor...but the true definition is cervical dilation or change over a period of time. So, if you would have asked this question at 25 weeks, I would have advised you to get checked out for preterm labor-the only way to tell if it’s true labor or just contractions is to evaluate the situation in a hospital setting. Should you have constant BH contractions? Ever? I do all day long and into the night. I am 36.5 weeks now but have them since about 25 weeks.
