Foster care placement call during licensing

Did you know in some places they will start placing kids with families who aren't licensed yet? While I never want a child to sleep in an office or hotel, I also hope that families are well trained and vetted before having kids in their homes. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

I want to foster mostly teens when I am of age and stable enough. They are usually blown off and expected to be more self sufficient. I'm not saying others need help any less, it's just that they tend to be overlooked and they're about to start a life of their own and need guidance.

We got Kinship Placement of my foster sister in an emergency situation before my mom got up to license. It was a very messy situation— Thank God i have amazing parents because no one even checked our house! The system is really crazy right now

Edit she was 14 at the time

My friends grandchildren have been put in a foster home. Thanks to you I was able to guide her away from being angry at the foster parents and towards being supportive. I suggested that she ask how she can help in the process to make this as positive an experience as possible. It still sucks but see if there are things they like about the home they are in and is there anything they need to make their stay more comfortable. I would not have known how to do that without you. Thank you.

Please also consider taking in teens. I was 15 when I was placed in a foster home. This was 12 years ago and I still remember when I came back from school that first day, my foster mom asked me how my day in school was, if I had any homework, and if I would need any help with my homework I should just ask. I was so overwhelmed by that question, because up until that point noone in my life has ever asked how my day in school was, and could assist me with my schoolwork. I remember practicing a presentation I had to give on school, and it was so weird finally having someone who took interest in me and trying to help me. Teens would have probably had fend for themselves for such a long time. This just makes me tear up again just writing about it.

I was put in foster care at 14 years old. I’ll turn 18 this year and next year I’ll graduate high school and college with my associates degree. I have my drivers license and a part time job, and I’m soon going to start my medical transition, and I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without the help and support from my foster parents. It’s crazy in just two years how many opportunities I’ve been given.

I’d want everything in writing. So many times kids are placed willy nilly out of desperation, then removed, then the foster families get “in trouble” for skipping steps.

I grew up in the foster care system in the 80's and 90's and one I became a teenager it was really hard for them to find homes that were willing to take a teenager because no one wanted an older child so I was eventually emancipated and made a legal adult before I should have been. I got a job, an apartment and graduated high school all on my own with no support.

I was a teen in a regular placement, but my foster family also accepted emergency placements. It was okay. A lot of middle of the night placements, usually lasting a few days or a few months at the most. The other kids were usually experiencing higher levels of trauma than I had, either because they had fled for their safety, had experienced homelessness, or had been doing a lot of illegal survival work prior to coming into care. But honestly, I think most of them relaxed a little when they saw that there was a long-term foster kid (me) already in the home, you know, to vouche for the family and make them feel welcome.

That’s a terrifying idea. They should be licensed first. I know kids need homes but that can cause a dangerous situation.

In all your videos, you're such a good example for new foster parents. I'm glad people who need extra help with the beginnings of foster care can come to your videos and learn from your experiences. I'm still a child myself but I can imagine how many new foster parents you have helped.

Yes we received kinship placement of our 3 month old nephew within a week and a half of finding his social worker. It was very crazy.

I was a foster teen mom, the sw told me if they couldn't find a family willing to take me and my child we would be split up and my baby would end up in foster care. Thank God there was an older couple that were willing to take us in and they made the basement into an apartment for me they were the best. I have respect for you

I was in a psych ward for 7 months and saw an abused girl with early onset schizophrenia that lead to violent attacks on herself and others need to find a foster home. Last I heard she was in a group home. I hope with all my heart she found a foster mum/dad like you- underneath her illness and trauma she was a beautiful soul and deserved a sense of safety. You do beautiful work ❤

Absolutely this happened to me and my husband. I was very upset because they lied to us about why she was leaving (burnt down a house) & the whole situation was insane. We were with that agency one year. Now getting recertification through another agency now that we understand what to look for.

This was like my situation, they just wanted it get paid..at least they were somewhat decent but not nearly as kind as you and your family…thank you so much for doing it for the right reasons! ❤️

Thank you for taking the time (from what I'm guessing is already a very busy schedule)
to give great & even essential tips to those already fostering & showing those who don't, how it's actually possible to easily fit a child into your family if you are prepared to.❤

Back in the 80s they used to lie and say I was 10. It helped that I was small I guess. Thank you for doing what you can to educate folks.

Can you give an example for an older kid (i.e 11 12 13+) who is scared/unwilling to talk and what you would do on day one

I had many unwanted children I tended to 30 years ago without a license or support. My son's friends, who were displaced in their last years of High School when mom moved away. They were able to graduate with their class and are very successful now.

When we were being licensed our agency almost bragged about calling people for placements before they were officially licensed. Say if the person was due to be licensed on Monday they would push it up and give them a placement.
