In today's video we're using habits to become the main character of our own lives. We're learning what that means, how to romanticise things and get our acts together. This is episode 3 of my redefining myself in my 30s because just because we get older doesn't mean we are any less valuable and there is so much more we can get out of life!

I’m 62 years old. I decided to go white/grey hair over Covid year, no more hair colouring. I have become more active, working out often and having more fun times than ever since age 40 😊. When I am surprised again that I am older, I remind myself that every year we get to be older is a blessing that many don’t get. Great video and now I have to buy another book 😊

I found that working out often became the best antidepressant drug ever.

I don't like to think of habits as forever, but rather like a streak or challenge to fit a given era. That makes it much more manageable and reduces resistance in the novelty seeking part of myself that I love.

The other thing that helps me, is twofold -- habit stacking one at a time, and having tiered habits. So, add one habit at a time, get it down, then add another one. For each habit, make it possible to do at different energy/time levels, so it moves from a yes/no, to a low/mid/high energy version, which makes keeping the streak a lot easier

On the subject of being kind to ourselves, I think this part is often overlooked:

Another way to look at "be kind to yourself" is being kind to yourself is sometimes doing the things you really don't want to do. Being kind to yourself when you're ill isn't letting yourself lie in bed dehydrated, it's doing what's hard to hydrate and give yourself nutrition so you can get better. But we can do all these things from a place of kindness with a kind voice instead of from a place of strictness.

Just something to consider as another way of looking at it.

Two things: 1, you’re reading The Goldfinch, one of my favorite books ever. Hope you love it.
And 2, you’re the first person I’ve ever heard say that “be kind to yourself” just may not apply to you. I had to stop because…same. I NEED structure and routine in my life. I feel like I use the “be kind to yourself” mantra as an excuse to slack off and not to what I need to do and then I just feel worse. For me, being kind to myself is knowing myself well enough to know that I need routine and ritual and structure.

I am in the process of rebuilding a set of routines too. As I approach my 70’s I realize that it’s now or never. I’ve done a lot of cool stuff in my life…but I’m not close to done. I don’t want to fall into a negative, old-age related, downward spiral. I’ve joined a gym, got a coach, dreamed up my favorite goals…and here we go!

I love to journal so I put a sticky note that says “B 12” on it. It has worked like a charm reminding me to take it. I just move the sticky note to the next page after I take it. Habit stacking really works for me!

I want to read the book you showed! I think it will help me on my weight loss/fitness journey.
Have you read “Born to Run?” It’s really good. It’s inspired me to run! I’m just waiting for your book to arrive so I can finish dialing in my dinners, I can’t wait to get it!!!
Thank you for your inspirational, helpful, gorgeous videos!! ❤️❤️

My hobby is learning to make as much of my own food from scratch as possible. It can be fraught with mistakes but successfully accomplishing various tasks brings me such joy. At 46 I’ve realized I can still learn and do new things. Thank you for your content and your inspiration you bring such joy to my day. ❤

I am the same way with my routine. Sometimes the weekend will throw me off track and it will take me a week and a half to get back on my morning exercise routine. I'll get headaches and sleep horribly until I get back onto my routine. I'm realizing that I need to keep it even if it's the weekend or if I am away from home.

Two days after I turned 30 (a few months ago), I got sick, later finding out it was mono and covid, and got hospitalized. I was immediately knocked down from my super-fit shape and told I needed to be careful for months due to my swolen spleen from mono. I'm at 2.5 months-ish post diagnosis and I'm working back up to where I was, fitness-wise, but I'm also realizing I have way less social battery for anything, and I really am wanting to prioritize my own needs more and more. It's wild and I'm really embracing that my 30s will be for ME, not to serve anyone else.

Hi - I have never commented before, and thought it was about time I did, your voice is so comforting, i feel myself just chillin out as I listen to you speak, anyway, as a disabled person in my early 50's I found myself feeling similar things, feeling less valuable, less useful, sometimes even not worthy of feeling listened to. i've paused the video, and I am going to get back to it now - just thought I would add my thoughts, I love your videos and I am loving how creative you are - I wish I was as competent and together as You are at such a young age. You are amazing by the way and very valid to me and I bet fellow subscribers xxx

I am having a really hard time in life at the moment. This video has brought me a bit of joy that I've forgotten in recent times. I've realised that my self esteem has just plummeted and you stop believing you can do anything. But it can be better and you've made me believe that. Thank you ❤

I can totally relate about needing strict routine! If not, I will fall into less than ideal habits. Excited for this series - good luck and congrats on your deadlift PR! 🔥
