This is all so true. I have no resentments because I force myself, against my natural inclination, to stand up to people as soon as possible. Telling the truth, not doing things that you hate, saying what you have to say…..pearls of wisdom

Stand up for yourself in a controlled yet straight forward manner.

I have just found out why a have depression at 73! I never learned to stand up for myself. My husband is not and never has been abusive but I always agreed with him straight away without thinking about the decision being made. So resentment grew for him and me. Now I no longer take medication.

I'd got by in life by being agreeable and completely conflict avoiding. Then I got completely railroaded by a very angry neurotic manipulative bully of a wife.
We are now into our 4th year of a protracted, bitter legal divorce in which nobody is benefiting.
I need to confront my shadow self but I'm afraid of what I'll find given how I've conducted my surface life for so long. But I take responsibility for my choices in life. I chose to marry her. It was my blindness and it's my trouble. We are destined to repeat mistakes unless we can seek truthful change.
I don't know the best place to start.... I'll keep watching JP content and reading around the subjects discussed.

100% agree. It's a struggle and a challenge you have to face no matter your age...
So important, thankyou.

I grew up in a violent home. I learned to make myself small and tread very softly.
As an adult Ive gotten stronger in my boundaries and my ability to stand firm and stand up for myself.

Calm on the outside but inside im still a scared little girl.

I have an In law who is explosive in anger. When Im on the end of that explosion I can on the outside apear calm and stand my ground. But the interaction makes me litteraly tremble. My heart will race wildly. The physical recation in my body is as if im still the terrified child wanting to runand hide for the monster. How can i get my insides to match my outsides?

Sometimes a man/person must become an Ass about things. My wife used to take care of our bills but she became disabled and mentally she was messing up things big time, I let it go for a long time because I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but then things got so bad that I had to do something, so I took control of the bills and at first she was upset about it but then after awhile she thanked, she said it was a big load off her mind.

Dr. Peterson, thank you for sharing this insight. This is a valuable life lesson and I wish parents or educators would address this when we're coming of age. I'm 60 and could have put this to use 40 years ago to better understand myself and to get my life in order. I don't think people truly understand their anger and resentments and perhaps aren't even aware of their true feelings. Self analysis is hard, but so necessary.

I don’t agree with this man on a lot of issues, but his intelligence and communication skills cannot be denied.

Although there are some people that after trying to speak in this manner with, are never wrong and trying to come to them with humility ends in very bad situation for you. Today I have decided to stop trying with my mother and start containing her involvement in my life.

I believe this is true.. I remember the story that was on the news long time ago about this old man who killed his wife who he had been married to for 40 years because she was nagging him about him watching tv all the time.. Imagine all the resentment and frustration he had within accumulated throughout the years.. Talk about things people.. don't kill each others
