Triggers are anything that remind you of a previous event, pain or trauma. They refer to something that affects your emotional state and can cause an intense emotion, physical reaction, "fight or flight", overwhelm or distress. They bring up old thought patterns, stories and narratives that cause you to react as if you are in the past, even though that isn't what's happening in the present.
