Should your dog be friendly all the time? Proper dog training takes guidance and leadership, and so does socializing your dog. Some dogs, especially puppies cant get overwhelmed, and it can cause long-term fear in your dog.

I love to call it "socialization" vs "exposure". Social = greet and learn calm behaviors, exposure: being around other things and being calm and neutral

Yes!!!! This is so clearly worded it helps me explain it to others. Not every time is a good time to pet my dogs, even if they are friendly.

I made this mistake, and now my 150+ lb dog wants to greet everyone. And I'm really working on nipping it in the bud right now. He did good yesterday around a bunch of screaming kids tho

Crazy, there’s people that I’ve come met that say a dog has behavioral problems because they lacked in socialization when younger, even though they were socialized plenty. They fail to realize how important obedience and the relationship with the owner are in relation to behavioral issues 🙁

Larry Krohn prefers the term "exposure" which I like because there is quite the misconception of what socialization actually means. I constantly deal with clients that say they socialized their puppy from 8 weeks a ton, and did the dog park 4 or 5 days a week or more but then at 8 to 12 months dealing with a very reactive or over excited dog because they see more value and get more reinforcement playing with dogs than their humans. Neutral is the absolutely best, and exposure is key, along with GOOD experiences in a controlled and structured environment when they do get to play off leash etc. Thanks for sharing!

Yup I did this with my first pup and yes it became a huge problem later on!! You’re soooo 100% correct!
My second pup we do not do this

Thanks for this! I was kind of confused and was not sure about this. My 2 months pup was running at all people. Excellent timing! Socialisation = being neutral around things of life. All clear.

Teaching them to be neutral is the best advice ever. Tom’s videos are the best, have helped me so much.

I love your channel Tom I’m almost 13 years old and adore dog training it’s crazy that I thought dog training was sit stay come just 2 years ago now I know it’s a lot more your my biggest inspiration because I didn’t socialise my dog properly and he became reactive and aggressive but now after tons of training and watching your amazing videos he’s no longer pulling or reacting as much to cars birds people and other dogs his aggression came from being a Frenchie as they don’t exactly understand other dogs but now he’s finally learning how to play and be a dog

I told my friends when they first got their puppy, not to let her jump up or on them. Now she’s a giant 40lb 8 month old that LEAPS on them while they sit on the couch and they complain of bruises. THAT is why you train puppies. You’re actually training for adulthood.

If only clients would actually listen to this advice 🤦🏻‍♂️. This sets the dog up for so much success and mitigates so many issues. Love your work!

Learning about this now. 6 months old and such a sweet boy we have, but he wants to say hi to everyone. So now we're tackling this!

Since quarantine my dog has gotten a bit "unsocialized" and that's definitely something we need to work on. I've been using your vids to help with basics and leash etiquette first. Seems to be going well.

Great advice I will be teaching my 14 week shih tzu this type of behavior and it’s being great so far. But it’s also hard because with toy dogs people want to touch them because they think toy dogs are safer especially children. I don’t want them to cross my dogs boundaries and I don’t want my dog to cross their boundaries.

Well that makes sense! I have two that will run up to everyone cuz they want to be friends. I'm glad they're friendly but they're also xlarge breeds to people freak out.

I’m realizing that must be the issue I’m having with my newly adopted 9 month old Aussie. He is overly friendly and DESPERATELY wants to get to any and all humans and dogs he sees or hears. He is wicked smart and laser focused on me at home, but out on walks is a different story! He doesn’t hear me to save himself.

I agree, for me socializing pups, is just showing and teaching them the difference between prey and off limits so they recognize pets, humans, from predators, threats, etc.
