Push Process

I've been asked a lot what the process of making these essays is like, but rather than just droll on about recording voiceover, late night editing sessions, and falling into despair upon seeing the first cut, I want to take these few minutes to talk about how that working process has evolved creatively over the past year, and about where I'm trying to take these essays in the future.

Hell yeah keep it different. I just started my video essays but I'm trying to push to not just be another another imitator. Good on you dude

These videos are becoming incredibly unique. I enjoy film essay videos, but I struggle to differentiate the ones I watch from each other. Names don't really stick out in the current video essay format, and I think this kind of boundary-pushing will help fight that problem.

Nothing wrong with wanting to improve and be different. That's the brilliance of YouTube. It allows you to be creative on your terms. What makes video essays great, to me, is the passion behind it. We're all just a bunch of fans. I understand that video essays have become more popular recently, but there are still channels (like yours) that are top tier and stand out above the rest.

For example, I fucking love what KaptainKristian is doing. He doesn't just do movies. In fact, he's never really done a movie. He's all about the creative process, and often talks about his favorite cartoons or characters. He doesn't talk about the X-Men, he talks about why color is important for the X-Men, and respecting the property enough when adapting it to film. And his editing is next level. He truly makes his videos his own. Shit like that is what makes YouTube a great place to be creative. Just frustrating that the more popular channels make shit content..

But keep grinding. Adapt and create. Make the videos how YOU want them and until you're happy, don't click that upload button. Keep creating good content, friend! Much love <3

As much as I love all the creators you mentioned, I do admit video essays have gotten a bit formulaic.
So this is refreshing to see :) I genuinely can't wait so see how you push yourself and the boundaries of this format.

How on Earth do you only have 72k subs. Your stuff is truly amazing.

You're absolutely right. There is a huge over saturation of video essays at the moment. I've flat-out stopped watching multiple channels because they're all doing the same thing. Please continue to keep experimenting with the form, I'm interested in what you're coming up with.

This is what makes your channel my favorite for film essays, so many of them just seam to blend together so much so that sometimes I can't even tell one apart from the other. Yours always have something that really stands out, I really started to notice that with your "The Images That Last" video. It took what many others would make an educational, but generic essay and had a different way of going about it. Ever since your channel has so much more energy then the others that really helps it rise above the others, thanks for putting out such great content.

This was brilliant. It feels like I've been watching someone become a filmmaker one video at a time. I'm excited to see where your evolving process takes you.

I thought this video was going to be about the push processing in cinematography. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.

The 24 hour story left me shaken once I was done reading it. You're doing an amazing job with these essays. You've helped me deal with so much doubt as a filmmaker myself with your, "No one is born a Prodigy, " essay. I thank you everyday for that. Along with your, "12 Angry Men, " staging video. I have those tips written down for whenever I'm blocking a scene. Don't ever stop. We're with you and can't wait to see what you create next.

Jesus man that was some incredible content. I mean this completely seriously when I say you are one of the most talented people on this platform. You’ve truly inspired me!

Very refreshing. Agree with you and a lot of the commenters in saying that video essays have become a little stale. Yours is one of my favourite channels and this makes me even more excited to see what comes of your videos in the future.

DUDE! Your videos have gotten _so_ much better so quickly. In fact, you _better_ be reeeaaal careful, 'cause if you keep pushing ideas this interesting with this much brilliant structure and passion you're gonna be at risk of becoming one of my favorite people on this entire god damn website and I mean that.

"Video Essays Aren't Lectures...They're Films."

YA HIT THE DANG NAIL ON THE DANG HEAD AND IT'S BRILLIANT MAN. It's the reason I keep coming back to you for inspiration. Keep pushing the boundaries and showing us your work, LITERALLY! :)

I'm impress. That video is sooo meta. At first, I was "Where he's going?". After, "Ok, it's a personnal video to warn us that he'll change the way he do thing." But at the end, BAM!, "Oooh, that video IS the new process". Brilliant!!!

I love seeing how you come up with these creative and fresh ways to communicate your ideas and make them more relatable. I think this is an attitude most creators on this platform need to have. This video was very inspiring and has me wanting to go and apply this process to my own work, thank you for these great videos.

Thank you for making this video! Your channel is one of the channels that helped push me over the edge of the "thinking about it" wall. I have since decided that I will be a director. Not want to be, but will. I want to stop complaining about poorly made movies, and start putting my money where my mouth is. That's why I'm going to start uploading on this account very soon. Thank you and channels like you for giving so many people a glimpse of what they could do for themselves and others in there creative pursuits. Again, thank you!

Dude, your videos continue to impress, and you are one of my favorite channels on YouTube. The consistent effort to improve and change when you know you can do better is really awesome to see, and I love the new direction you're taking with making these essays a narrative of their own. "I lost the magic" really took me by surprise with that different format, and I was like "Wow, is he going to do more of these types of things? because that would be pretty cool." Keep up the great work, I always look forward to your videos!
