Grow This Orchid! The Easy Houseplant Coconut Orchid | How to Grow Maxillaria tenuifolia

Been a long time since I've done an orchid video! I want to do a few videos that fuse the gap between houseplant lovers and orchid lovers. While orchids are often intimidating to grow, the coconut orchid, or maxillaria tenuifolia is a great option for beginners. The coconut orchid is an easy to grow houseplant that offers great color and texture for in the home and rewards in the spring time with fragrant red flowers. The coconut orchid is possibly one of the easiest to grow orchids, I would place it at least in the top 10. How to grow orchids often get complicated and can scare people away from giving them a try. What's great about the maxillaria tenuifolia is that it can be grown like a lot of common and easy to grow houseplants, but with bark or moss instead of potting soil. If you're growing aroids and have a bright, humid space, I highly suggest adding in some orchids as they will accompany your humidity loving aroids very well.

A new friend of mine gifted me a clipping of this little fun orchid. I have several orchids and vandas and like the Sharry Baby Oncidium I am attracted to easy care and enjoyment of all things green. Just placed it in aa fully ventilated plastic pot with chips, charcoal and coconut husk. I'll be interested to see how I make out. Thank you for the nicely narrated video.

I have this orchid and love it. I have it close to the Sharry Baby Oncidium that smells like chocolate. So I get a coconut with chocolate scent.

I bought my first Maxillaria tenuifolia 'Haupia' last week at an orchid show and it's in moss, but I live in Connecticut where most of my orchids are in a bark mix.

I was told by the vendor that they can take up to 48 months to rebloom. I've also heard that high level light is needed.

Slipper ordhids and cattleyas are supposed to be easy.

Thank you very much for the information. Mine did not bloom but I did't know about the rest it needs so I can try that now. I sure hope you are doing well. I like to watch your vidios while I am doing my Saturday chores and watering my orchids and any time I get a chance. You are so entertaining no matter what you are talking about. You make me laugh out loud alot.

For me phalaenopsis grow really well. I just repot them with loose sphagnum in terra cotta and water them only when the leaves start to wrinkle. If they are growing in compacted sphagnum, I just place them in a larger terra cotta pot and after the first watering they will adjust to it. Also always bottom water them, and they have been the most carefree plants I have (even less demanding than my cacti). I've recently been growing jewel orchids, and those are also wonderful with the gold, silver, platinum and rose gold markings on their velvety leaves. With those I just treat them like any normal medium light houseplant; keeping the soil relatively moist, and that's all. Now I'm getting the itch to try a maxillaria and cymbidium!

Hey Jeff
Great to hear some info on orchids. My experience with these types of plants has been very consistent, I sadly kill them each and every time. Ive got a strong feeling I overwater. I also need some proper orchid bark rather than using the store stuff. You've got the skills my friend😃👍

I may have to get one of these!!! I keep trying to grow orchids and failing at it. But I really believe it is because I didn't have my grow lights. And I bought orchids that had bad roots and where in the wrong type or media. I am going to keep trying with healthy orchids. I have managed to keep a ground orchid alive for over a year!!! Hopefully by this time next yeat I can say that about other varities!! I am going to have to research this orchid and see if they are easy to find. Thanks for the video!!! Look forward to seeing more easy to care for orchids!!!

Hi Jeff! I really enjoyed this video about the Coconut Orchid and that it's one of the easier orchids to grow. I may have to try and find one. I love the leaves on it! I'm glad you will work in some videos about easy care orchids. I've only had Phals, but would like to try others. Thank you so much for sharing!
