7 Orchid care tips and strategies that are easy to understand and put to use

An orchid is a special plant, not only by the way it looks, but also by the way it is taken care of. And let’s agree, an unbloomed orchid can’t make your living space look better.
A general advice is, before buying an orchid it is better to find out information about what it is needed for the orchid to thrive. After successful experimenting on one orchid only then you can expand your orchid collection.
And if you decided to look after an orchid, here is what you need to know.
1. Choose smart and start with little:
There are many types of orchids, and for a start, the right orchid would be the one that is less demanding and more suitable for indoor growing. The most easiest type of orchid to look after is Phalaenopsis, and it would be a good start.
2. No Direct Sunlight
Orchids are tropical plants therefore they do like light, but direct sunlight. Therefore it is recommended to place the orchid in front of the window that faces east or west. However Phalaenopsis can face North as well.

3. Correct watering
People make a common mistake by overwatering the orchids thinking it’s a tropical plant and that it needs a lot of water. In reality there is no need to water your orchid more than once a week. The best method to water the orchid is to submerge the roots into water for 20 – 30 minutes, or spray the orchid softly. Make sure the water is not too cold.

4. Feeding equals growth
Absolutely all orchids need fertilizers. It is recommended buying fertilizers that are specially designated for orchids. Fertilizers are added into water once a month during the active orchid growth only.
5. Changing the pot
Orchids need their pots to be changed every 2 years. You have to be very careful because the roots could be damaged during the process. Fill the new orchid pot with new growing medium. Before moving the orchid you need to trim all the dried and unhealthy parts of it. The end of trimmed parts must be sprinkled with cinnamon solution. After repotting, water the orchid for 3 days straight and add the fertilizers in a month.

6. Mind the right temperatures

Orchids love mild fluctuation between day and night temperatures. At night temperatures should vary between 12 -18 degrees Celsius ( 54 -64 degrees Fahrenheit). And during the day the temperatures should be 4 to 5 degrees Celsius higher (or up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit).

7. Trimming the flower stems

When the orchid flowers withered it is needed to trim the flower stems in half, under the second or third node, so in this manner your orchid will flower again soon.

In CA, I set my already bloomed orchid out in a basket with dirt, bark, and hung it touching a tree, ignored it thru winter, by Spring its blooms were enormous. It was violet and white, smaller flowers became bigger. It loved the mistreatment!

1. NEVER PUT CINNAMON ON ROOTS. 2. If this would be about phalaenopsis only, the lighting would be fine as she said. Different species have different requirements just like other plants. 3. Never pour water over anphalaenopsis and get water in the crown as shown in the video. You will kill your orchid. 4. Phalaenopsis are not the easiest to grow. Oncidium are in my opinion as I grow orchids and own my own business. There are more things I can tell you that are wrong with this video but I am not going to pick it apart. ADVICE, QATCH MORE THAN ONE VIDEO NO.MATTER WHAT THE TOPIC IS. TAKE THE COMMON DENOMINATORS OUT OF THEM AND USE THAT INFORMATION TO HELP YOU. Orchid care is going to also be dependent on humidity levels in your home. Higher humidity homes won't need to water plants or chips as often. Lower humidity homes will need watered more often.

Watering a orchid...tip👉 room temp water, RO water is best if you have hard water, do not get water in crown( can get Crown rot), if phal roots are a bit of a silver color they are dry if green they are wet, they like to dry a bit between watering. Do NOT ever water with ice cubes they do not like that 🙈!!! Add some humidity 40% or more for a happy orchid 🌼 💞🌸

Mine loves morning sunlight in an east window sill over my kitchen sink I have it in a vase about 1/3 full of water with the crown out of the vase. I use dilute Miracle Grow. It has awesome roots and is putting out a new leaf and looks like a flower spike s emerging. I got it blooming as a gift in Oct. the blooms finally faded & fell off in March! I just mounted it on a cork slab hanging off my cabinet just about the same place it sat in the window sill. Try it this way. They are like weeds. My house gets very cold in winter, little did I know that’s what makes them bloom!

I live in coastal central Florida. When an orchid given as a gift stops blooming I take it out of container. Bare roots I wrap with raffia or put on orchid hook and hang in magnolia tree that is shady under the lower branches. Then I ignore it..no fertilizer and occasional rain or spray with garden hose.now they are blooming with just nature. Orchids grow on trees in woods near our rivers and springs so these are doing the same. They are not really fragile.

Orchids need a rest period. Some species will bloom sporadically throughout the year, but that’s not typical. Don’t water with ice cubes, and don’t force your plant to expend energy it needs for functions other than flowering.

Thanks for the information about how to take care of orchids. I lived in Hawaii back in the 80's, and I love orchids, but afraid to take care of the plant. I learned something from you now I will get some.

Dont take off the flower stem unless it is dead. The orchid can send out flowers on it. I have seen it and talked to a master orchid grower about it. If the orchid is not well it is best to remove the stem but other than that leave it Alone!

I feed my orchids with egg shells. Put egg shells in a warm oven for 10 min. Takes them out and
crush them. Then put the shells in a coffee grinder for 10 sec. until powder. Feed it the powder
twice a month. You will have beautiful plants and flowers. I also put them by a window but no
direct sun.

I've had my first orchid for little more than a year but I still spotted multiple mistakes in this video. When watering the plant they poured water over the crown of the plant, which can easily cause rot and kill it. It also recommends spraying without mentioning the risk of rot. Orchid leaves should never have water on them due to the risk of rot. The only time it's necessary to spray water is if it has air roots, but the leaves should remain dry. It might be humid and get rained on in a rainforest, but the water also evaporates quickly enough as to not rot the plant. It also said to cut the spike all the way back once it's lost all of its blooms. As long as the spike is green you should not trim it as it still contains vital nutrients that can be reabsorbed and can still grow a secondary spike out of one of the lower nodes. There's no way to know which one will spike if you cut it back first. And it said to trim dried roots without specifying what that means. Unless roots are black/brown and mushy you should not cut them, and even then be very careful not to cut any healthy portions of the roots. And never apply cinnamon to roots as it will burn them! Cinnamon should only be used on the ends of leaves if you must cut parts of them off due to disease, always being careful not to get any on the roots.
