Are We Saved By Faith Alone?

Is faith without works dead as mentioned in James 2:14-23 or is it a gift of God and not the result of works as mentioned in Ephesians 2:8-9?  Watch our latest video with Fr. Panayiotis, Ph.D. as he explains the Orthodox perspective on faith and works in relation to the Protestant and Catholic view.

As a Protestant looking into Orthodoxy, I fully agree with this. This is the best explanation on faith alone and works. Our Faith produces our good works, and our good works demonstrate our true faith. Faith and works are two sides of the same coin.

I’m a Confessional Lutheran, but more and more I find myself agreeing with Orthodox theology. And since I went public with that, my Lutheran friends keep coming at me with “Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura, Monergism.” And I find myself more and more sure that those concepts were Luther’s innovations, heavily influenced by both Augustine, and “age of enlightenment” thinking. Please pray for me as I wrestle over my next step.

Superb explanation.
This is what I love about Orthodoxy: its well-considered, balanced and healthy tradition.

Luther said a lot.Sometimes he made some real mistakes. What I love about this explanation is how biblical it is, not exaggerating or taking certain passages out of context and not demonizing Luther but showing real humility. My biggest fear as a Christian is hostility and an us and them gang mentality in different groups (which I have heard from both a few Orthodox and really conservative Lutherans), which this priest does not show.

I’m an Anglo-Catholic, and I find myself agreeing with everything Fr. Panayiotis says here. Love my Orthodox brethren; the peace of Christ be with you all! 😊

Currently studying orthodoxy and find it fascinating. I always explain myself good works are the evidence of true living faith. Please pray for my journey and who knows maybe I will embrace orthodoxy. I have been only a Christian for almost 2 years.
You have an awesome channel and will definitely be watching more.
Peace of Christ be with you all and God bless

I am currently a Confessional Lutheran, but when I heard that Martin Luther wanted to get rid of The Epistle of St. James, my heart dropped. I became Lutheran about 1.5 years ago but even before then, I have always had Orthodoxy in my mind every day. Pray for me to better understand.

If the apostles had not done good works, we all wouldn’t know about the Lord Jesus Christ.

The works we're discussing are the natural progression of the Word being in you. I think it's most simply described as this: if your faith is true, and you're listening to Christ's teachings and obeying them, your behavior (good works) will naturally show it (bearing fruit).
At least that's my layperson understanding of the text.
