Are We Justified by 'Faith Alone'?

Most people were taught that Catholics believe in "works righteousness," that we must do things to earn our salvation. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Jesus said, “ If you love me, keep my commandments” which to me is self explanatory. Even if we have faith, we cannot be complacent.

Born and raised catholic. Lost my faith along the way. And have recently re-found my faith due to life changing events. Very happy and experiencing inner peace.

I love your perspective! I am actually in the process of converting to catholicism. I was asking God this same question earlier and came across these verses. We are obviously saved by grace due to the fact that all our works are rags compared to God. But it definitely still matters that we produce good fruit in cooperation with Grace and faith.

References:

Matthew 7: 16. By their fruits ye shall know them.
21: Not everyone that saith unto me, lord, lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven.
22: Many will say to me in that day, lord, lord, have we not prophesied in they name? and in they name have cast out devils? and in they name done many wonderful works?
23: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

James 2: 17--Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works?
22: Seest thou how faith wrough with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
24: Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith onl.
26: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

I am Lutheran and I do enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for the explanation and clarification of this subject since it divided western Christianity. I agree with your understanding of the Lutheran explanation of justification. If I can put it simply, Lutherans believe that if you really believe in Jesus and he really is your God and Lord then good works can not help but come forth from you. If no good works come out if you, then you are probably a hypocrite.

I once was asked by a protestant, "But when do you know you're justified?" I honestly couldn't understand the question, so I answered, "When I am allowed entrance into Heaven I will know I am justified, until then I hold on to my faith, I try to live my faith, and hope in God's mercy." My friend thought I was odd.

Doing my own thing will never get me where I want to go. I must do the work of Christ.

I have a lot of Lutherans in my family and (while I definitely disagree with their beliefs on justification) appreciate when we Catholics extend a hand of understanding to our fellow Christians. God bless you!

I had come to the conclusion a while back that perhaps Protestants and Catholics were saying the same thing and that the actual problem was a misunderstanding of terminology. Thank you for this Father Casey. May God continue to bless you and your ministry richly.

Thank you Fr. Casey
Raised Baptist and now a Roman Catholic convert of 9 years.
I have used your teachings along with others like Fr. Mike Schmitz as a catechist teacher at my parish.
You are doing a great service to us, giving us truth in our faith and extinguishing all the myths that have separated us since the reformation.
Results of too many of us making our own interpretations of sacred scripture/tradition and following our own needs instead of putting God first.
From the words of Fr. Mike and in my own heart, "I am falling deeper in love with God and the church he has given us"
God Bless 🙏
William

Love these videos! This is the new way of learning our Catechism. I sometimes have trouble comprehending the priest's sermon at my parish because I'm more of a visual learner. But with this, showing everything that you say and even keeping it interesting with the pictures really helps. Props to your editor (or you) for adding the texts and pics! Job well done.

Lutheranism: We are not poop covered in snow
Catholicism: we are snow sprayed with poop
Me : can you two stop?... or find a different metaphor?😂😂🤣

Very good video. Thank you for your deliberate, precise, fair explanation of both sides. Too many times I hear exactly what you said in the beginning “Protestants believe you can do whatever” and “Catholics think you can earn your own salvation.” It’s much more complicated and nuanced than that. There are definitely distinctions, but it’s nice to see a fair take on the matter.

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:2

“And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have ALL FAITH, so that I could remove mountains, and HAVE NOT CHARITY, I AM NOTHING.

As Jesus states in Mt. 25:31-46, Charity, is key!!
God Bless!!
