NEVER TOO SMALL Experimental Small Sydney Apartment - 24sqm/258sqft

Inspired by and named after traditional Japanese Tansu cabinetry, this 24sqm small apartment ws completely rearranged by Nicholas Gurney. The space was opened up to fit a cleverly designed central pod, by removing a wall and relocating the kitchen rather than shifting the small apartments utilities. The Tansu pod combines kitchen and bedroom, folding outward at either side to create additional dining and work spaces, exploiting space typically left empty. Ultimately creating an experimental, dynamic small apartment.

placing a huge wooden block in the middle of the appartment seems to me like the opposite of an "open living space". also leaving that one inch gap between the wooden module and the ceiling did nothing for me, aside from collecting dust

The 'pod' has made the space seem drastically smaller and can we talk about claustrophobia?

I love that no matter where you are in this apartment you get natural light.

I could not sleep with my head that close to the fridge. Imagine the constant vibration

I don't think I have seen a less practically designed space on this channel. The black with light colored wood aesthetics are nice but that central pod position makes every space awkward especially the two fold out table areas and the sterile living room.

this is the first space where I think the "before" was better than the "after"

All these folded-unfolded furnitures are surely neat, tidy and comfortable. But being the lazy ars* that i am, i would perhaps be sleeping on the floor every night if it costs me my energy to unfold the bed in order to sleep. 😩

Didn't much like the design concept. That huge have-it-all wooden block in the middle is an eyesore.

Contrary to many comments here I really appreciate the style and the layout, it’s clean, modern, functional and uncluttered, perfection

Why oh why?? They should have kept the old layout. When he opened both tables it literally stressed me out. Blocking access in such a small space makes it so claustrophobic.

Congrats on making a house of corridors and road blocks. I can't imagine every time im done with something having to slam it back up into the wall in order to get around to the other side of my home

I'd change the "couch" but other than that, amazing design!

loved how the pod became a part of the kitchen, the bathroom, the living space and the bedroom, separating the areas from each other which might have been difficult otherwise in a small space.

I lived in a modern space with this footprint for a year a few months into COVID quarantine. If it weren’t for the balcony I would have suffocated much sooner. It’s livable honestly but not very comfortable.

if your cooking with friends over, they have to stand behind you in a 2ft space, if you want to sit on the couch they have to sit next to you, if you have more than 2 people in the space its unusable, does the client have no friends? This is such an anti human design, its almost anti social and reclusive... Imagine sitting on that sofa in that massive area and watching that tiny TV, why would you want to eat dinner facing your door? Why does it need to be two separate tables? Its inconceivable bad

Nice - I would have had a fold down table on the Murphy bed though, which could fold back up when the bed is lowered. That dining table is pretty darned small! It's an amazing bolt hole in Sydney though..

An already small space looks even smaller, to me at least

I always imagine how much a custom all-in-one furniture like this one would cost.

I'd rather have a comfy bed and couch all cramped in that space than this cold atmosphere

Why would you ever want a full size mirror inside the shower? Imagine cleaning that every day...
