Jobs aren't the problem, most the time people are the problem. And in my experience the better skilled you are, the more senior staff will target you.

That's why i left my job cold turkey. I was like, good luck doing my job without me. 1.5 years of torture. Took me a year to recover my self esteem. Leaving was a blessing.

My nitpicking boss has caused me to nearly break down from stress. Just got a job offer from a company that seems really enthusiastic about me, and I'm relieved that I'll be leaving the toxicity behind.

Hard work, good work, and loyalty do not guarantee success. Bosses often have who they want to advance in mind. Sometimes their choices are not better workers, they are just people the boss feels more comfortable with or who are more like them. You boss may like you and your work, yet won't advance you. If that happens, it is time to find another job, if you want to advance.

Just quit my job. Doing the best I could but it was never good enough for my boss. She nitpicked and micromanage the hell out of me and I was doing the best I could. So I called it quits because that is stress and negativity i do not need. I have already done so much for that company to be undermined on a daily.

Another type of undermining boss is the one who "tells you to do the job you are already doing." This, to me, is different from "micromanaging". The boss can plainly see that you are doing your job, but he/ she feels the need to throw their weight around a little bit... to flex their authority, and just give orders because they seem to have missed their order- issuing quota for the hour. I've had a couple of those.... and just left on the spot. When they ask why I'm leaving, I will tell them why. If they threaten my future by saying they won't give me a good recommendation with future employers, I'll tell then that I will dissuade anyone from taking this job that may have to work under that boss. I'll remind the boss that the door swings both ways.

Went through this. Some people shouldn’t go into management. I think some people have control issues as well.

So important to identify when this is happening. Blaming you for mistakes and sabotaging is horrible leadership.

Another would be dismissing your ideas.

I gave my notice yesterday and I will be leaving 2 days before the New Year. I have tried discussing issues with management and made every effort for a healthy resolution. Some managers simply only care about themselves. I am tired of being the reliable employee who never shows up late and doesn't call in. Companies are naive if they think good employees will stay now that this pandemic has made it clear that this is a workers market. Good workers are fed up with self-centered managers and tired of bad employees who call in or don't show up and are shown no consequences for doing so. Starting off my 2022 with a new job. Best of luck to everyone in a similar circumstance.

It's even worst when a co-worker undermines you, pointing every single mistake, because they think they are perfect.

Leave! You will never change them. Period. Put your energy and talents to a business that will appreciate you!

I had an undermining boss. It stressed me out. I was blamed for other people's mistakes. I no longer work for the company

Some bosses have their mindset made up already. It doesn't matter if u talked to them about it. If they don't see or acknowledge ur works. It's a dead end job. Speaking from experience here. I just gave up on trying to be my best. When ur works exceeds expectation, but ur reward doesn't show it. That's a red flag right away. I started to hide my ideas & projects that will benefit me without sharing to my team & the department. In addition, some bosses only see and find faults in your works without understanding it themself.

I have worked under a lot of undermining bosses, but I didn't know how to deal with them. Thank you so much for sharing useful tips.

When I started working for my company, my manager was one of these, to say the least. When he was retired, nobody was hired to take his place. I think he knew I was there to eventually replace him. The sad thing is that I looked up to him at the beginning before I started to realized that he was resentful, petty, and small. I am so glad he is no longer around.

Many people love to be in control of others... it's a power game.

The thing is... they might not be the boss at home.

In order to understand management and companies in general you need to understand the “dark triad” which is Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and psychopathy. My previous boss told me this though not in these exact words.

Its sad because you look up to senior management in the beginning only to eventually discover that it was all a facade to sabotage your success and undermine your value. Its a perpetual cycle of narcissism in the workplace and I’m seriously considering my exit strategy soon meanwhile I’m just getting started. 🙄😭
