It's safe to assume that more than half of the human population are enduring a job that they don't want to be a part of at all. While perseverance is admirable, Dr. Peterson believes that too much of it will only make you resentful and bitter about your life. So it is better to sever ties before this happens.

Micromanagement is the inability to train the staff, most of the managers nowadays are amateurs

I work in the boat industry. When I was 22 I worked for a boat part company that only gave $20 an hour. After working 2 years (which by that time was considered seniority) I told them that a major boat manufacturer offered me $35 an hour to do the same job. My boss said the best he could do was $24 an hour. I said with the cost of living rising this will not support my family nor the goal I am working toward (which was being an independent boat manufacturer). After an hour long lecture of how I would become a slave to this company and that I should stay and reap the benefits that I have (at the time), I decided to leave. Now after only 6 years, I build boats in my own pool barn and make quadruple (~$200, 000 yearly and growing). In short, don't let the industries tell you what you are worth. Chase your goals/dreams. I am 33 now and want to thank my 22 year old self

I remember a woman told me she'd worked with a company for 15 years or so. She was a great asset to them, but they just wouldn't give her good enough raises for the work she was doing. She found another company that was willing to give her an extra $20, 000 a year and better benefits for the same exact work she was doing. She told them, "Hey look, I've been a good worker, I've been loyal, but if you wont be loyal to me, I'm going to walk." They let her go, she took the other position and 6 months later they called her back and tried to get her and she laughed and told them no.

I found the answer to this very easy after working directly for people. If your boss is concentrating on your faults and ignoring your qualities you've already been fired they are just running it in their head.

Speaking against the insanity in my job just gets you targeted further.

I was fired for making conversation with a coworker who sent an email to HR saying I made her feel uncomfortable. It sucks because I spent over 2 years there thinking I was on my way to something better. My advice is to be careful what you say and do not try to make friends in a corporate environment

The boss who treated me the best was working for an electronics security company in Las Vegas, I use to install and repair security cameras at businesses like Neiman Marcus and wealthy homes.

My boss/owner was African American, him and his wife were so kind to me, they treated me like family. His wife would occasionally bring me a 5lb container of Cashews because she knew I loved them. Every Christmas they would pay for a round trip ticket to Maine for 2 weeks so I could see my family. Of all the people I’ve known outside of my family, they were the most kind and generous, even when they had no reason to be.

Another story. Years ago, working for IBM, my boss called me on the telephone and chastised me one time too many. Closed my tool briefcase, hopped into my car and drove to the office to kick his butt. When I got to the office, my manager had been fired. Thus, I had a 30 year career instead of going to jail.

I left a job where I was for 23 years for a new one that paid slightly less. After three years at the new job, I am making more than my best year at my old job. Also, since leaving my old job, I stopped drinking alcohol and lost nearly 40 lbs of excess body weight, and I am off anti-depressants.

This is the reason I left my last job. They kept giving me unrealistic, politically “correct” requirements. It took a whole year to gather up the courage to leave. But I successfully made my escape.

you know what they say, people quit bad managers not bad jobs. I'm in management now for the first time and I live by this statement. I have yet had someone quit that wasn't due to personal reason. I try everyday to make the people who work under me lives better at work with the resources available to me. I try to find the strengths and work with those rather than to focus on the weaknesses of people.

"You should always have an escape route planned."

Excellent advice. I have lived in terror for the last 10 years because I got cornered by life and crappy jobs. Keep the crappy job you have now and ALWAYS be sending out resumes and talking to recruiters. Attend every networking meeting you can and let people know you are open to move.

I wish I had seen this 3 weeks ago. I was forced to sit through 7 hours! of DEI indoctrination on Linkd in learning. I did tell my boss in my monthly 1:1 meeting a week later that I wish I had had the good sense to say NO. This video would have motivated me to do so. I am in all of the situations he mentioned. I'm going to stand up from now on.
