My great-grandmother's family was robbed by communists when Nicolas II was overthrown and killed. That family was very rich by selling goods in St. Petersburg. My great-grandmother's father worked his ass off and was hella the businessman who kept bringing huge amount of presents for his ENTIRE village each time he came back from the city.
And they were robbed by lazy, envious and hateful drinkers. Their beautiful home was turned into a school. Priceless stained glasses of their windows were detroyed. Such a shame and disgrace from my country towards my pure angelic great-grandmother Vera. Rest in peace.

I strongly disagree with JP’s take here. Pointing out white privilege is not about accusing all whites of crimes of the past. That’s ridiculous. It’s about recognizing the systemic biases in favor of white people still in place today. The justice system, interactions with police, leadership positions, economic opportunity, generational wealth, etc. If we truly want to create an equal and fair society, to deny the existence of these advantages inherent to the foundation of the country is counterproductive in my opinion.

I love his nuanced opinion. There are certain privileges of being white (more job callbacks) but that doesn't mean we should feel guilty for what we have not done and what we cannot control.

The problem with saying "White people are privileged." is it's like saying "Men are tall." On average it may be broadly true. But there are plenty of exceptions to the generalisation. And we'll be abandoning or even penalising downtrodden people if we assume they're privileged just because of their appearance.
