Lecture: Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God

Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.

It's amazing how Peterson made me pick up the Bible at the age of 23 to read it intentionally with focus where I have been avoiding it all my life with constant effort from parents to read it.💯💯

I really don't understand all the hate this man gets. He literally takes you on a journey through his logical thought process.

It's terrifying to me that we almost lost this man. He is deeply needed.

This man saved me from a very dark form of nihilism. I cannot express the psychological transformation I've made since discovering him about 3 years ago. This lecture series is the consolation of my life, and it will be the consolation in my death.

I was in despair, in the depths of alcoholism, watching my accomplishments, financial situation, and marriage fall apart. I heard JBP's podcast episode titled "Toxic Masculinity" where he discusses his friend's suicide. I had already been well past the point of plotting out a suicide plan and that lecture pulled me from the brink. I'm nearly 500 days sober and have a decent job. I've been volunteering for service in Alcoholics Anonymous and have begun going to church recently in an attempt to improve my spiritual condition and societal bonds further. On top of that I've lost 70 pounds since I got sober. I've never been a patient of Dr. Peterson, but he's done more for my mental health than any psychologist I've ever seen formally. If I could see him today, I'd thank him for talking me off the ledge, even though he never knew he was doing it.

Edit: I never expected to get 1000 likes on a 5 year old video, thank you all so much for the outpouring of support. I’ll surely see some of you as I trudge the road of happy destiny. May God bless you and keep you until then.

I'm 15 years old and your videos are changing my life! I doubt that there's anyone going to read this, but, who knows...
I've been born in a Christian family (my father is a Pastor) and I've been struggling hard for the past two and a half years with the apparent contradictions between the objective reality and the way Christianity has been taught to me.
I was taught to look at reality through the lenses of Christianity. The problem with that was that, by the time I was 13, I had noticed so many inconsistencies and lack of sophistication in the teachings of Christianity that I couldn't handle it anymore and had to admit to myself that it was necessary for me to figure out another way of interpreting the world and/or Christianity.
Since my father is a pastor, I thought that he could answer my questions and explain to me exactly what certain teachings meant. But turns out that he could barely scratch the surface of the problems I was facing with understanding Christianity.
Jordan B. Peterson's videos have helped me immensely to unpack the mysteries of Christianity and to understand what does it actually mean to have a meaningful life.
I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't for your lectures, I'd be going down the path of becoming nihilistic.
I feel like I'm far from finishing this journey, especially because in your lectures you talk about some quite complicated topics, but you've helped me a lot to find meaning again in life and in religion.
Thank you very much, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson!

JB saved me from hanging myself. April 2020, I'd lost everything & listening to him and reading "Man's Search For Meaning" saved me. He's an amazing soul & I'm gobbling up the knowledge I can - I hope to meet him one day, even if it will be on the ethereal..

Jordan Peterson, I grew up without a father, my mother married 5 times and was very unstable. I battled with drug and alcohol abuse, dropped out of school, turned to crime and was a very narcissistic, destructive individual. Sadly, some of this happened while i became a father at 24 years old to a boy, and i ruined my relationship with his mother and essentially my relationship with my son because of the self-destructive nature i nurtured.

Now I'm 41 years old, that boy is 17 and I now have a 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter with another baby due in May 2019. I still struggle with fear of failure and commitment, feelings of inadequacy, but you have helped me to understand that I am not alone and I can be the father I never had.

I want you to know that your words and your ideas have helped me become the father I need to be to break the chain of poverty, addiction and abuse that plagues my family tree so that my children can have a better life than I had. You have helped me find meaning in my life; to improve myself so that those that come after can have a better chance.

Your wisdom combined with that found in the Bible have put me on the path that i was meant to be on. I believe God has sent you as a messenger to guide the men of the world back to Him. You aren't perfect, you are Jordan Peterson, and you are more of a father to me than any other mortal man has ever been.

My family are forever grateful for you. Without meeting you, we love you. You have helped change the future of my family history.

Thank you. <3

P.S. please don't send me a bill :)

What I love about his lectures also is that I myself am not a graduate of any kind im a Pepsi delivery driver with youtube premium so I can listen to his lectures without the screen having to be on. I am not a scholar or college intellectual but its easy and fascinating to understand his lectures.
