My family thinks I saved the kitten I found last year. But actually, she saved me - through all of what happened this past year

I've always lived in a multi pet home with dogs and cats. At worst, they tolerate each other. At best, they're snuggle buddies and play together. I can't imagine life without both.

I have a picture of my dog and cat snuggling on the couch when they were both about a year old. Then I took another picture of them at age 17 still snuggling together on the couch. They absolutely adored each other their entire lives!

My childhood dog and cat were loving companions. Indoors, all around the house, they were best of friends, but my dog was boss.
My dog, Lulu, came to me for my 7th birthday, 6 months after my Father's death. Peebo, my cat arrived a year later. A feral kitten found with her mother and sibs, under our neighbour's garden shed. She was a tiny, terrified scrap of fluff, and spent all of her time, hiding under the kitchen dresser, peeping out occasionally (hence her name).
Lulu instantly became her protector, mentor and mother figure, coaxing her to eat - yes, our dog would push the cat's food bowl towards her, and wait for her to eat, before even touching her own food. Peebo was soon won over, coaxed out into the open, and then introduced to me, my mother, and family friends, by our dog. If Lulu failed to introduce Peebo to someone - don't trust them! They shared beds, they played together, Peebo would accompany Lulu on her morning and evening walks.
However, in the garden Peebo was boss, and Lulu soon learned to behave the way Peebo wanted her to - "no chasing or your nose gets scratched!"
It was clear that no one had told them that cats and dogs couldn't be friends.
About 3 or 4 years later, Peebo went missing. Lulu kept looking for her and crying. A search was organised by friends and neighbours, and after a couple of days Peebo was found, under a hedge. She had been shot in the head by air rifle pellets (This is the UK, still emerging from the post, WW2 era. At the time it was common for boys to get air rifles to "play" with. Unfortunately some thought it was fun to shoot at animals, wild or domestic.)
We were able to take Peebo home and bury her under the rose bushes we had planted in memory of my father (he had been a cat lover, and always said he wanted to be re-incarnated as a cat).
Lulu was distraught, she couldn't understand where her companion had gone, she wouldn't eat, she cried, she refused to leave the house - it must have taken a couple of months before she accepted that Peebo was gone. But, if she ever saw any cat that looked even remotely like Peebo, she would walk (never run) to check. She frequently got scratched for her efforts, but she never gave up, not even in her old age. So, don't let anyone tell you dogs and cats can't live together!

i’ve always thought cats and dogs were “natural enemies” until i got an elderly dog from a shelter, followed by rescuing a cat a year later. i have so many pictures of the two cuddling together!! when Dutch(my elderly dog) passed, my cat had started to get depressed and stopped eating, she was basically dying of a broken heart☹️. it took a new cat AND dog buddy to cheer her up. Dutch and Aspen had a bond i’d never expected to see a dog and cat have❤️ i miss seeing them together, it’s been almost 4years but i’m sure to Aspen it feels like a lifetime

This is so true. We have a pitbull and a cat. Everyone is dumbstruck by this and thinks my cat is supposed to be a snack. Not so! The pitbull treats my kitty as if it were her baby. She is very protective of my cat.

My dog is young and active and my cat is a slowed-down senior cat and they live in total harmony. They sleep on each other, lie together, groom each other, the whole shebang. Sometimes Diego (doggo) is too high-energy for Sienna (kitty), but she literally meows at him and he stops in his little doggie tracks - like she's using her human-voice to tell him off or something.

Bipetual, hell yeah! I hate it when I'm asked "cats or dogs" without an option for both. I can't choose!

I had a cat and a dog that just dealt with each other until the cat died (cancer). When I brought home a kitten my dog basically adopted her. They've been best friends for 2 years now.

When we had our Siamese he was two years old when the puppy Collie/Setter mix came into the household. We were good about letting our cat have his space and helping the puppy learn not to be so impulsive around the cat, though I don't remember how we actually went about this...is was while I was younger. Anyway, our puppy learned who was the "alpha " fur family member, and our cat learned she wasn't a threat to them home. They became great friends, even though the pup grew to be larger in size, and would play with one another and defend each other. An 85 pound Collie/Setter and 12 pound Siamese chasing each other around the house is noisy fun.
They have long been gone now, passed away, but both are fondly remembered.

me watching this is bed sandwiched between my dog and cat...
these two are mine, but in total there is 5 dogs and 5 cats owned by different members of the family here in this house. they all get along except for one cat that belongs to my grandmother, but that cat just doesn't really get along with anyone, even the humans of the house.

I had a Rottweiler and a Bombay cat. The cat was older, so he had to adapt to the puppy. The Rottweiler lived for 10 years, and the cat for 18. They LOVED each other, and protected each other. If someone came over the cat didn't like, the dog didn't like. They were the sweetest, even sleeping in my bed at the same time. Never believe that a dog can't be with a cat. Just be smart and notice if one of them is uncomfortable, and act on it to be safe.

I had my dog for around 3 years before I adopted my cat! The adaptation took a week. They were secretly friends, but had some moments of conflict. Mostly they were up to mischief together haha. My loved babies. They are no longer here but I want to keep having both cats and dogs in the future. ♥️

I have a 6 year old dog and I found a little kitten on the street and had to take him home. They hated each other at first but after a few very stressfull weeks of barking, hissing and my heart racing, they are best buddies and destroying my house 😁. I kept them in separate rooms at first and very slowly introduce them to each other.

When my cat was a young barn cat, he and his brother used to hide and surprise my parent's border collie all the time (and the baby goats). He's completely civilized now though, thank goodness lol

If it weren't for our boxer rescue (she showed up on our porch one day, skinny and afraid but so very sweet) we wouldn't have our cat Rocky. Rocky's mom was an outside feral who passed giving birth in the night. The next morning we found her and the kittens and gave them a proper burial. We assumed all the kittens passed with mom, however when we let Wilma out to do her business within moments she came to us carrying this wriggling thing in her mouth. Here it was a newborn kitten! So we got him warmed and fed, eyedropper feeding him until he was big enough for a bottle. Now he's a spoiled three year old kitty who as I type this is laying on my desk looking for the next thing he can knock over lol. Our guess is because when we took Wilma to be checked for a chip plus a check up the vet said she looked like she'd recently had pups so we assume her maternal instinct kicked in and she knew that this tiny helpless creature was in danger and who better to help it than the humans that rescued her.
