How to STOP knee pain when squatting

Knee pain and squatting ☝🏽

Squat form, mobility of your joints and leg strength can all impact how a squat feels for you 👀

⚠️ IMPORTANT: if you are unable to stand up from a chair without pushing off with your arms and/or have high levels of pain- make sure to build foundational strength first with a chair squat before attempting this ⚠️

Putting your heels on top of a dumbbell or another elevated surface can change the mechanics of your squat and require you to put more weight into your hips 🙌🏼

This is why this variation tends to be nice to the knees 🎊

Only go down as far as is comfortable. Use upper body support to hold onto as needed, especially if you are not yet confident in a squat ☝🏽

10-20 repetitions may be a good place to start for most but is highly dependent on your leg strength and how this feels for you ✅

It is possible to overcome knee pain and regain both mobility and strength! Follow along for more tips on how to get your joints out of pain and feeling strong again! ❤️

When you squat, pressure builds up in your joints, most notably the hips, ankles, and knees. According to research, elevating your heel using weightlifting shoes increases knee and hip flexion, while also reducing ankle flexion. In basic terms, this allows for greater and more comfortable hip and knee bending, helping you to squat deeper, without pushing your ankles forward.

Tried it and it helped my knees, especially with the first part of the squat. I’m grateful for her research based recommendations of other ways to approach such powerful exercises.

I have always squatted like this but it wasn’t because of knee pain. I just have never been flexible enough to go all the way down. Great tip! Love your videos. 👍

Wow never thought of using my dumb bells for this and I kept thinking what to use what to use as I have seen similar alterations by other YouTubers. Thank you very much and now I can use my dumbbells for this alteration

You are the ONLY person I have seen actually explain why this takes away knee pain and where to transfers the load to! Please keep putting info in your reel captions!! Since it transfers weight to your hips, if I’m trying to preserve my hip joints (PAO surgery survivor 😉surgery @ 38 yrs old) then I’m assuming I should this squat variation and stick to my regular squats?

Yes indeed! It works too! ❤

Hmm... Maybe I need to try this. "Free squatting" (my term for squatting without the use of a chair) has become impossible for me but I know I have some knees left lol.

Has something to do with short/tight calf muscles? I have EDS, born with flat feet(short calf muscles) and in my sixties in spite of being in good shape my knees/hips gov me trouble. Believe a tight ”back string” situation contributes to this. Correct stretching(not overdo it) important on a regular basis. Believe flat feet further contribute to stress your knees. This serves like getting heels on and mobility increases…. Less stress on knees! Am I right?
