This case was about a dispute between a pediatrician and a health insurance company. The insurance company wanted the dispute to be resolved through arbitration based on their contract, but they also wanted to have the option of a class arbitration. An arbitrator found that the contract allowed for class arbitration, and the insurance company challenged this decision in court. The court upheld the arbitrator's decision, and the insurance company tried to have it vacated, but the court denied their motion. The Supreme Court then clarified the limited scope of judicial review allowed by the Federal Arbitration Act, and explained that an arbitrator's decision holds as long as they were "arguably construing" the contract. However, absent members of the plaintiff class did not concede to the arbitrator's authority to decide whether to conduct class arbitration.
