Ozempic (& Wegovy) Side Effects | How They Work, What They Do, And Why They Cause Issues

Ozempic (which is the medication Semaglutide; and has different formulations known as Wegovy and Rybelsus) is a medication used to treat Type 2 Diabetes and has been used more recently for weight loss purposes. These medications are glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, meaning that they “mimic” natural GLP-1 to activate these GLP-1 receptors in the brain and the gastrointestinal system to promote satiety and reduced gastric emptying. However, these affects can also cause issues, including side effects (adverse effects or adverse reactions), which we discuss in this lesson.

I'm seven weeks into Ozempic for my Type 2 diabetes and weight loss. I was nervous about potential side effects until my doctor explained that in my case, the benefits outweighed the risks given that I'm obese. When she put it that way, I decided that I've failed at weight loss most of my life, and this may be what I need to lose some pounds. So far, I've lost 22 lbs, I've greatly improved my diet and especially my portion sizes, so, these new habits can stick with or without the meds. My blood sugar and A1C are fabulous. And, just very moderate side effects. For me, it's a game changer and just may help prolong my life. But let's see where I am in another few years. Hopefully not a big as I started.

I have been on Wegovy for 6 weeks now. I watch what I eat, pretty bland diet, no alcohol and have had very little side effects. I am down 8 lbs. It’s working.

Just diagnosed with Type 2 and began the lowest dose of 0.0125 -- 🤢OMG!!! I lost all my appetite and vomited for two weeks straight. 🤮The horrible side-fx never wore off -- constipation, migraines, dizziness, fatigue, I quit after 6 weeks. Horrible stuff!

I was on Ozempic for 12 weeks. Lost 22 lbs. Had to go off this med because of pain on my left side and skin that felt like sunburn. I really got scared and went to two doctors. They couldn't figure it out. The pain on my left side has now gone to my right side even though I have been off the med for several weeks. I still wonder if I have damaged something permanently and will never, never take any weight loss med again. Be very leery and careful of Ozempic!

I had dinner at 7pm, woke up at 2am, I threw up, had diarrhea and when I threw up I realized I had no digested any of my food. Been feeling really weak and with nausea. I stopped taking it and now I'm feeling better.

I take the lower ozempic 0, 25 mg and have no sideffects. I need to listen to my stomach. I doesn't matter if I payed for a full plate, if my stomach says stop I will stop. Otherwise I will be sick.

I was on ozempic for 7 months and I did get blurred vision and hair loss. After getting off it my vision went back to normal and hair is not falling out like before. I was not diabetic and I lost 30 lbs, but I was not morbidly obese to begin with. I’ve been off it for about 3 months and I haven’t gained weight since the gym is my friend now that I’m not as fatigued as when on ozempic.

I have had to stop Wegovy while titrating up after week 3 due to severe gastro issues. I literally could not leave my house due to severe diarrhea and stomach flu symptoms. Followed the BRAT diet per CNP advice, off for 2 weeks and getting ready to restart to see if any better. Fingers crossed. I may just be one of the few than cannot tolerate this type of medication.

I'm happy to beat diabetes without taking any meds. You need to work on yourself whether you are on Ozempic or not. Otherwise you'll get weight back.

Im type 2 diabetic on ozempic for 6 months. I am trying not to lose weight. My issues have been constipation & diarrhea. I was irritable in the beginning because I was confused when I was hungry. The feeling was different. I also experienced low glucose for a month. I'm an endurance athlete currently, former college football player. I'm debating on getting off ozempic. Diarrhea has been a daily issue for the past two weeks. I also sleep a lot more than before.

Hiatal Hernia- I started taking Ozempic a year ago, on my last CT Scan (which is annual by my doctor) I did not have a hiatal hernia, but THIS Year, 1 year later I have a Hiatal Hernia. I have expressed to him that the Ozempic is making me to where I can't go to the restroom, and i've thrown up in my sleep a few times in th emiddle of the night, but because my blood sugar is still high, he wants me to continue taking Ozempic. I'm pretty sure the Hiatal Hernia is caused by the medication. I've NEVER had any stomach issues ( no heartburn, or acid reflux, ect) until the past couple of month.

We’re all unique and medication effects people differently. I’ve been on Ozempic for 10 months and haven’t had many of these side effects.

Thank you so very much for this information!
Wow, those are some serious side effects.

I have type 2 diabetes and take it.
My physician just increased my dosage and I have been expelling gas irritatingly frequently.
It tastes and smells like rotten eggs and it's disgusting. I'm going to ask my Doctor to lower it back.

This information was so thorough and I really appreciate it.

I can also fold the skin on my arms and my hips, and my face and neck look deflated.
When my face was fat I looked 10-20 years younger than my age. Now I look 10 years older.

I detest having diabetes. I know there are worse conditions but I really wish I had taken care of myself many years sooner and never had gotten it.
Please, if you don't have diabetes yet, do whatever it takes to never get it. I also hate having to acknowledge that it's self inflicted.
I wish I hadn't had abused my body.

My BG or A1C was 😅6.0-6.4 without insulin. It shot up to 9.0 after pandemic isolation poor diet and to much alcohol. I started on VICTOZA a mild version of semaglutide and I had nasty diarrhea side effects I couldn’t leave trhe house for fear of an epIsode.
I lost very little weight but my A1C rebounded back to 6.1 with no other lifestyle changes just taking the VICTOZA. I decided to get serious about reclaiming my youth, vigor and overall health. I switched to Ozempic and I have had ZERO side effects, nothing but no weight loss. I am on 1 MG dose weekly but will reduce to 0.50 because my A1C is 5.5. I went back to a raw vegan diet 5 days a week, quit alcohol cold turkey not a drop, exercise 1-2 hours a day 6 days a week and weight came off like Melting butter. The key? IMO quitting alcohol. Once I did this everything fell into place. I will discontinue the Ozempic once I reach 4.8 A1C and monitor monthly with Lab tests accordingly. You are supposed to stay on it for life otherwise the weight comes back and BG numbers also reverse. I don’t have issue with staying on it its a miracle drug as far as I’m concerned but i want to travel without being on medication if possible so why I’m going to give it a go without it. We’ll see what happens but so far so good everything is great i feel like i.m 25 again with energy and stable blood sugar levels the key to health IMO AND no side effects.

I was on Ozempic and got nausea, gut paresis, reflux, and my period went crazy so I had to stop using because I'm worried about having kids. Hopefully I can have a baby, and loss weight without it. I wish there was more studies on women of birthing age with thyroid dysfunction, hypo/hyper
