Like to hike but hate the steep parts on the way down?

Have a steep driveway or a hilly neighborhood?
Try going down in a zig zag! You may be surprised at how it doesn't flare up your knees

This trick can be really helpful so you aren't paying for hiking hours or even days later. It can also bring the enjoyment back due to less dread going down

I use this trick all the time on extra steep parts of the trail stop make it easier and to avoid falling.

Now, it can be possible to go down straight but going down hills isn't always the most comfortable- especially after a long hike or maybe during a flare

Cutting across can help to reduce the amount of pressure that is going to your knees as you go down
In order to go down hills- you need quite a bit of control. This is because you have to control your weight going down the hill

Have you ever tried this before??

I so wish I had known this before hiking in the Rocky Mountains with my knee osteoarthritis. Even though I used trekking poles and wore compression sleeves on my knees, I still ended up with painful and debilitating pes ansarine bursitis!!! 😢

Thanks. I used to hike and downhill was brutal. I used a trekker pole with a little shock absorption to do downwards stairs. My knee is a ton worse now so I am checking your channel out. I’m doing pool PT and finding doing sideways stepping across the pool to be super painful and anything that involves balance on that leg will make me have to stop after a couple of seconds bc it feels like my knee is twisting off. Any advice for making sideways walk and balance improved? I feel like I need a knee brace in the pool even if I want to do these two actions. The lateral balance is the worst. I’m a TKR candidate and dragging my feet ( literally and figuratively) on getting such an invasive surgery done. Trying to milk every last bit of function from my knee before it gets replaced and also stay semi strong and not lose more function and strength which is hard while in pain.

Instead of this, try to put your feet in front of you and walk in a slow manner

If you're having knee pain while hiking then you need to stop hiking. Maybe do a little physical therapy.
