Lifting is cool. Running is cool. CrossFit is cool. Walking is cool. Hiking is cool. It’s all good. Anything that gets you off the couch is a good thing.

When crossfit began, form and technique were a huge deal. Completing the reps correctly was a huge deal. I remember literally being told to do the movement correctly and finish the reps no matter how long it took me. Things changed when anyone and everyone could become a crossfit instructor by taking a test on a computer.

The high skill movements are part of what makes me enjoy it. It's things I've never done before, and I've always got something else to work on. People are over training because they are driven to do more and do better. Runners overtrain all the time, because they know if they run more, they will perform better. Ultimately, it is about learning your boundaries, and not making the same mistakes while training.

Mobility and flexibility is just as important as muscle mass and strength if not more so
You train yourself and prepare yourself for those types of movements
You start easy then move up to those movements once you get better and more flexible

Agree to a point. Volume is the biggest killer especially if you're getting into the sport. I remember going to my first CrossFit gym, one of the workouts was 150 wall balls for time...no intermediate numbers or movements...thats exactly how you injure backs and knees!

Treat CrossFit like a season if you have other goals like strength and gains. I split the emphasis into annual quarters: Functional - Hypertrophy - XF - Strength, and repeat.

All you need to get in shape is
Deadlift
Squat
Bench
Barbell Row
Military Press
Pull ups/Push ups. Progressive overload with each movement. Simple

All exercises have skill limitations, skill and technique is one of the most important things worth testing. Ring muscle ups, proper running form, olympic movements, lifting a sandbag from the ground, hand stand pushups. I think one of the things we miss is actually testing people's ability to learn movements. What I mean is if you asked people to compete in shotput if no one had ever done it or knew how to do it, then it would just be power, coordination, and your ability to quickly learn a movement pattern, but if one of them threw shot in high school it is a huge advantage. If someone rowed in college that's a huge advantage, if they did olympic lifting its an advantage, if they got proper coaching on running form it's an advantage, but when you put enough things in those advantages in one even don't mean a lot because the variety is so high.

Learning the new skills is why most people love CrossFit. Going through the scaling variations to get stronger en build the skill is what I enjoy. If you have people coming in instantly trying high skill movements, that’s an issue with the coaches/gym, not the methodology.

The learning new and difficult movements definitely helps with athlete retention though. I love CrossFit because I’m always striving to improve at all the difficult movements.

Always learning is what makes it fun, and fitness being fun makes people more fit because they’re more likely to workout more often.

Agreed. This is also on a gym to gym basis. You train how your coaches train you. If they aren’t holding you accountable for your training then you need to exit that gym and find another. All these crazy lifts can be scaled, so the framework is there.

Been practicing CrossFit for almost a decade but the allure for isn’t so much the workouts but the high skill movements - which introduced me to calisthenics and gymnastics, that I’ve been doing for the last year (still keeping up with CrossFit for maintenance tho) which I would never do in a WOD 😂
