When you have a music icon like Mama Cass mesmerized to where she is sitting there with her mouth open, you really have something. This was a literal jaw dropping performance. Yes, that is Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas they showed. Members of her group were among the prime organizers of the Monterey Pop Festival

The woman with her mouth hanging open was Cass Elliott of The Mammas and the Poppas.
She was a talented singer in her own right, and she helped organize this festival.

I am 70 years old I have never heard anybody sing the blues with that passion, she never funded love I hope she is feeling the love of her old and new fans now ❤

Janis put every ounce of her body and soul into every song she sang. She did not sing the blues she was the blues. There will never be another “Pearl”.

This. Is from the Monterey Pop festival in 1967. The talent there for 3 days is mind blowing and was the beginning of hippie and counterculture music hitting big and moving into the mainstream
Janis Joplin
Jimi Hendrix
Jefferson Airplane
Richie Havens
Momas and Poppas
County Joe and the Fish
Ravi Shankir
Otis Redding
You must understand that for a generation raised in1950 on dean martin and frank sinatra
This music blasted into our souls
Raw, political, anti war, singing of free love and peace.
The singers were integrated. Black and white together. This was a new generation

There is a great film with all of the videos that survived called
Monterey Google it

FYI. The woman in the audience was Moma Cass of the Mona’s and papas .

Big Mama Thornton wrote and first recorded Ball and Chain. Her version is on youtube if you want to compare. Big Mama also was the first to record Hound Dog (it was written specially for her), which later became a hit for Elvis. Janis has a good number of songs that fall into the "as good as it gets" category.

1967 Janis Joplin didn't have a recording contract until this performance. She was one of a kind. This festival introduced Hendrix, Otis Redding, Canned Heat and the Electric Flag to the masses.

"Mama" Cass Elliot of The Mamas And The Papas, and a successful solo artist was obviously surprised and blown away by this performance.

Janis truly stole the show at Monterey. She made quite the impression on other famous artists at the festival as well at the audience.

This was a festival where artists were making their best efforts to impress the world, even with a bit of competative spirit to top each other. After all, THEY ALL PLAYED FOR FREE! (including Hendrix and the Who*)

Legendary performance were the result. And Janis was right on top of the heap.

🤘😄

*except Ravi Shankar, he was the only artist paid

She and this band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, were known in the San Francisco scene, but largely unknown outside of that at this time. They appeared here a couple of months before their first album was released.

I saw Janis in concert twice. Two shows I'll never forget.

Singing like Janis did must take an emotional toll on her, she sings her heart through her vocals in every song. She isn't just excellent, she is superb! Thank you Janis Joplin

♥ Janis Joplin! Monterey Pop introduced the world to both Joplin & Hendrix! They both stepped onto the stage relative unknowns & walked off LEGENDS!

Awesomeness flows through this video....Janis Joplin had such a powerful, passionate and beautiful voice, and it was unfortunate that she died at such an early age. Her legacy will always be her music and presence on every stage she performed on. Even Mama Cass was in awe as she sat in the audience listening to Janis sing Ball and Chain!! Thanks for reaction to this treasure of an artist!! Hope you do more video reactions like this one, I enjoy your reaction videos!!

I'll know I'm in heaven when I get to give Janis Joplin a big hug.

The original writer of the song was the great Big Mama Thornton. Janis asked Ms Thornton if she could record it, and she made sure she got every cent coming to her in royalties. They had love and respect for each other

Their performance at Monterey got Janis signed. Cass Elliot said it all.

Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Janis Joplin was a one of a kind singer with a unique voice. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Summertime", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.

My daughter is 20 & although I have raised her on everything, I still send her one song a day to listen to. I refuse to fail as a parent 😂 The last thing I did last night was send her this performance in Monterey. I woke up to Phil & Sam holding down some Janice. Perfect choice y'all!
