I have been the one who has been quietly running the place that I work for. Whenever I go on vacation, things get WAY backed up. But, my boss does recognize that without me, he would have to hire 3 or 4 other people and since he actually tells me that he appreciates me, I am happy. I do however work for a Non-profit organization.

I always thought I was the competent silent type but when I finally got the courage to stand up for myself I got "demoted". I've actually started to believe that it's more important to be likeable or sociable than competent.

I think part of the reason some are reluctant to negotiate for a promotion despite deserving so is because they're more concerned about job security than elevating their career so they settle for not rocking the boat.
