Very interesting comparison. Next time you go to the Westside, take a look at Makaha Valley. We are from the Naples Florida area and 9 miles from the beach. I guess we could have chosen anywhere in the state of Hawaii to live but we chose Makaha Valley Towers. We looked at Big Island, Molokai but continued to come back to MVT. We use it as second home and spend 4-6 months there. We recently retired from high stressed jobs....Fire Department and Medical Auditor and frankly we currently live in a beach town with snowbirds pouring into by the thousands during the winter months. So we were looking for peace, quiet and a beach that we didn't have to fight over. Well to our surprise we have met great locals who are so kind and people in the Valley who are from all over...California, Texas and Florida who were looking for the same thing....people who are working from home and looking for real people with family values and respect for the kapunas. Also in the Valley are million dollar homes and a new community being built. My husband grew up in Manoa Valley and I'm from thing I know from my upbringing and from my treat people regardless of who or where they are with respect. Just because we all have moved into the Valley we have no plans to change like it just as it is....we are visitors and visitors follow the rules of house/community.

Waianae reminds me of imperial Beach/ san ysidro in the San diego area. Most people won't bother making the trip to the southernmost beach

Loved the video! Very informative. Originally from the Bay Area Nor Cal and am moving to Oaho in November. Was kinda concerned about what area to land in when we get there as we know nobody there. But your comparisons to the Bay Area cities were very helpful and put some ease in my soul. Thank you for your time and effort. Keep going and stay encouraged.

I've been bingeing through the videos in your channel, and I appreciated the isolated drops of California city names in the other videos. This video is my favorite so far, because it presents the unique Hawaiian neighborhoods by reference to the California towns. I would give this video 10 thumbs up and a shaka. You know the Bay Area cities so well.

I watched this to the very end with your final thoughts, and it's exactly what I needed to hear. Your take on the culture of respect in Hawaii, in contrast with the aggressive, antagonistic spirit in California, is why I've been dreaming of a move. It has gotten even worse in California. California is diverse, but diversity without mutual respect creates factions and competing groups already divided by language, culture, and old-country prejudice. It is to the point that the diversity is an actual downside to living in California, now. I say this as a member of an ethnic minority.

Please Sir I need your precious opinion: I am 31 from Italy, In 2 years I will have 3 degrees, currently speak fluently 5 languages while I have studied 8 and I work as firmware developer in a French multinational company. Do you think I have a chance within the next two years to land a job in the tech sector in Hawaii?
The 5 languages I speak: Italian, English, French, German, Chinese. Plus I have knowledge of Japanese, Spanish and Russian.
The 3 degrees: Languages and cultures, Robotics, Applied artificial intelligence. The tech degrees have been undertaken under the stricter requirements of an international university in Germany.

Wow... I lived in Palo Alto and moved to Kailua about 6 month ago. You make me nostalgic just hearing about your mentioning cities. Kahala is more like Hillsborough, I would say?

I watched your video, but only heard Newport Beach in comparison once…I rent here in Corona Del Mar, I enjoy the convenience to steps away from the beach. Would there be anything in comparison to CDM in Hawaii?

You know the bay alright! Having lived in Oakland for 5 years, Hayward for 20 years, and now the north bay for 15 years, coupled with working the streets of Oakland for 16 years, you know the neighborhoods and thoroughfares (ie. Fruitvale, High St, Temescal, Telegraph, east/west Oakland, Port, etc). Awesome comparison to say the least. It helps my wife and I conceptualize the neighborhoods in HI as we are looking for a 2nd/retirement home there. A video in the new gated community of Makaha Valley and Ho'opili at Ewa Beach would be great!

For me Ewa beach is like Upland/ Rancho Cucamonga. Old area with new fancy builds next to each other

Love your videos. Moved from Jersey to Irvine CA twenty years ago. I ended up working in Oahu and loved it and thought this is where I would end up though watching your videos has put things in perspective for me. I'll continue to work and vacation there.

As someone who grew up in Monterey Bay and lived in LA since ‘88, there are amazing areas to this state and endless things to do for entertainment. It’s also nice to live near practically every trendsetting and culturally loved treasure such as TJs, In’n’Out, IKEA, etc…while also having many major teams in different sports to root for. Vegas being a 1-hr flight is nice too.

Having said that, my #1 reason for wanting to retire in peace in Hawaii is that the ocean is too cold in California. It’s an amazing ocean to look at and is fun to play at the beaches…but the water is a no go without a wetsuit. Living in Manhattan Beach is prob reminiscent to living in Kailua - just in larger scale - but to me a beach town where one can’t actually play in the water is a critical shortcoming.
