The Top 10 BEST Cities and Small Towns to live in Hawaii for 2021. America's 50th State is among the 10 Best States to live in, so it has many great places to move to!

The Aloha State truly is paradise. And while many vacation here every year, few people actually end up living in Hawaii, which is a shame! There's so much serene nature, beautiful beaches, amazing food, and perfect weather, and it's also got one of the best cities to live in America in Honolulu.

But with 137 different islands, including 6 that you can live on (Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai), you might need some help deciding where to move to!

Sure it isn't the Cheapest State, but from Waikiki to North Shore to Kailua Kona, Kahului, Lahaina, Hilo, or Lihue, there are so many of the BEST small towns in America.

In fact, Hawaii is actually the HAPPIEST State with the highest quality of life and life expectancy in the United States, so if you want to live in Honolulu, HI, what are you waiting for?

In order to determine which cities and towns are the best (or worst) in a state, we analyze a few categories including their economy, crime and safety, education, cost of living, health, amenities, and quality of life. I also implemented my personal experiences and the pros and cons of each location.

My biggest suggestion is to visit these states first to decide where you want to move to and live.

If you have a medical condition that requires frequent checks by a specialist, or if you are retired and anticipate needing special treatment as you age, Oahu is your only option. Kauai, Maui, and the big island have small hospitals with some services, but for major illnesses or specialized care, you will only find that on Oahu.

“How can you be stressed living in Hawaii?“

Easy. The high cost of groceries, gas, and housing. The low salaries. The high traffic. Being far away from your family/friends on the mainland. Difficulty being accepted as a local due to racial tensions. Friends constantly moving away because everyone is being priced out. Homeless people everywhere. Prevalent meth issues. Political corruption and a laughable police force.

People really need to do their homework before they up and move to Hawaii. Unless you’re a trust fund recipient or a Powerball winner, you’re going to struggle in Hawaii. Do yourself a favor and stay on the mainland, where you can actually afford a home, childcare, and groceries. Save Hawaii for a vacation.

I just moved from Maui in October after 9 years for elder care reasons. It was the best experience of my life. I was living off grid up country Maui in Haiku with limited electricity in a 2 story tree house with no hot water. For me up country Maui is like no other place. We are at about 1300' elevation, trade winds 99% of the time and a night sky that takes your breath away

my mother is from Hilo Hawaii, In 1939 i was born in California, 8 months later we moved to Hawaii and stayed until the second world war started and we were handed a choice, stay in Hawaii till the war was over or go to California with my fathers family, we went. I moved back here in 1962, that make me a mainland born Hawaii resident.

Aloha, I do believe you've been beaten up enough with the pronunciations and so I am certain you know that for anyone in Hawaii, they were hard to listen to. But let me give a little perspective from the stand point of a non native resident homeowner from Kailua Oahu. It IS very expensive, but no more so than large cities like LA, or San Francisco, . However, you will find shopping for groceries and such costs more because we are in the middle of the ocean and goods need to be shipped here. Once you adjust to the sticker shock, you forget it and go about loving the island life. There will be chores, shopping, bills and all of the regular commitments that will keep you from living life like as if on a permanent vacation. However, your free time will allow to explore and enjoy everything here to your heart's content. Staycations are the BEST here. Nothing like a weekend at a hotel that others save to come fly to and visit. Crime, meth, other drugs - better than where I moved from, but homelessness is worse. I think folks compare crime to what Hawaii used to be like and forget that crime is increasing everywhere. Native Hawaiians are incredibly kind and gracious when you show respect and become a positive part of the community, but there are a few haters just as there are anywhere in the world. My house is smaller, my dollar does not stretch as far, but I feel incredibly grateful to call Hawaii home. The Aloha spirit is a real thing, and folks are just kinder to each other. There is a saying, "Lucky we live Hawaii!" and I agree!

An interesting and pretty accurate take on Hawaii. As a former resident of The Big Island, I thought the take on Hilo and Kona was pretty accurate. I loved my 7-year stay in the Hilo area and always thought of it as old Hawaii. One thing I quickly learned was you don't move to Hawaii and try to change things, rather you just try to fit in and act like a local.

Hawaii is my ultimate favorite place I want to move to one day. I’ve been to the islands 3 times already, and it just breathtaking.

I loved growing up in Hawaii in the 80s and 90s, and sometimes I get nostalgic for it and think how awesome it would be to live there again. But after a few days there on vacation once a year, I'm cured of that nostalgic feeling and happy to not live there. Best to visit.

Quite an achievement, butchering 75% of the place names. Great research and attention to detail...

I first lived in Hawaii (in a Quonset hut near Pearl Harbor on Oahu) in 1955-1956). My father was in the Navy, so we returned (to two houses, the first in Radford Terrace, the second in Foster Village) in 1959-1961. I returned to visit many times between the mid-1970s and 2017 when my wife and I purchased a condo on Molokai. Two years later we bought a house in Maunaloa. Thank you for not mentioning how fabulous life on Molokai is! And we're just a short (under 30-minute) flight to Honolulu or to Kahului, Maui. Molokai is definitely not for everyone. In fact, I doubt ten percent of the U.S. population would find life on Molokai to their liking. We're simply far too remote for that. But Molokai is THE old Hawaii. Molokai is my wife's and my favorite island. We do our major shopping at Costco, WalMart, Target, etc. on Oahu. We ship the larger items to Molokai via Young Brothers barge. Molokai is truly no ka oi! Thank you (mahalo) for a very nice video on Hawaii!

Yay finally! I'm so excited for another one of your videos I was watching a lot of your City videos and a lot of them you said that you needed a car to live in. Can you make the top 10 cities in the United States where you don't need a car?

No matter how good or bad a place is in Hawaii, you'll need to make a truck ton of money.

If all roads lead to Rome... Then all flights lead to Oahu (especially for islanders)... Sure life is hard and it's a struggle.. but it depends on what one wants. Some comments are about all the ill's and vices but what place in America doesn't have those problems (especially cities). Even when I was struggling, scrounging and not eating everyday, I could always surf or hike or cruise around. Many people I know started out with crap jobs and barely making it.. but many grinded it out and made connections and improved their situations. Plus Honolulu has great parks and it's free to find a spot grab a grill and enjoy life a little.
And Honestly for me... it is Paradise...

I've gone on vacations to Lahiana and Kihei, and both of them were awesome. Lots of stuff to see and do, lots of amenities, warm, and overall great.

What a wonderful video, as I've been looking for the best Hawaiian town for nearly a decade! Surprised that the Garden Isle didn't get more love.

I'm surprised you haven't made videos like this in a while counting down the best places for individual states. You should do these more often.

I lived in Hawaii for four years..in Ewa (not Ewa Beach)...It was a 40 minute drive on H-1 to get to Hickam AFB each morning, but those years (1996 to 2000) were some of the best years of my life...I loved Hawaii...In 2000, three months before I was stationed to Nevada, my daughter was born in Honolulu...At Tripler Hospital...aka the big pink hospital on the hill..
