Do Not Call All Locals In Hawaii Hawaiians

Be sure not to be this guy when you are moving or traveling to Hawaii 🙅‍♀️

Residents in New York are referred to as New Yorkers, while those in California are known as Californians. So why can't the same rule be used when referring to someone who lives in Hawaii? 🌴

In visiting Hawaii, it is a must to understand why the American, Hawai’i Resident and Native Hawaiian are so important to use correctly 💯

A Hawai'i resident is not automatically regarded as a Hawaiian just because they were born, raised, or currently dwell on the islands. A Native Hawaiian is someone who has Native Hawaiian blood in them and whose ancestors are Native Hawaiian. They are not Hawaiian by ethnicity, hence this 🙅‍♀️

Hawaiian has strong cultural, spiritual, and historical connotations. For Native Hawaiians, it is considerate to understand that no one who lives in Hawaii should be referred to as a "Hawaiian." It should only be used to refer to Hawaiians as an ethnic group 🌺

Be respectful of the islands' past and the people who came before you whether you're a tourist or a permanent resident.

99% of the people that live in Hawaii are not Hawaiian. They're just locals with attitudes.

Nationality does not equal to race 🤦‍♀️
You can be black and be borne and raised in... let's say canada and be Canadian regardless if your parents or ancestors are from some country in Africa

Imagine telling a Texan he isn't a Texan because his ancestry is from Europe

~🌺Auwe! If a PERSON LIVES in Hawai'i they ARE A "LOCAL/HAWAI'IAN" by Residence.
If they have "Hawai'ian BLOOD" like my Hapa Tita they are "Kanaka Maoli".
Pau!

Correct, not all locals in Hawaii are native Hawaiians. The term "local" in Hawaii refers to people who have lived in the state for a long time, regardless of their ethnic background. Since Hawaii is a culturally diverse state, and its population includes people of various ethnicities. The term "Hawaiian" typically refers specifically to individuals who are descendants of the indigenous Polynesian people who inhabited the islands *before* European contact.

Funny cause a lot of locals say they are Hawaiian when in fact they are just Filipino or Chinese or whatever they happen to actually be, only a small percentage of native Hawaiians exist anymore

I agree with her. You can be a citizen of Hawaii but not Hawaiian. Its not the same as California = Californian. The term "Hawaiian" speaks of ethnicity first because that was the term already in use to describe kanaka since the first people showed up and met the Hawaiians. It already had a clearly defined meaning before Hawaii became a state. Just because there was a system already in place for identifying citizenship in each state doesn't mean we get to redefine what being "Hawaiian" means. It means ancestry first. An easy solution is just to say you are a citizen of Hawaii. Bam, no need say anything more.

Kanaka versus Hawaiian. Kanaka are the people before immigration was aloud. Hawaiian are the people born here and raised in the community. kamaʻāina/ Kaki ohka aina. It's always important to show respect for the people raised in the culture who adopted their own blend of values as they were raised by the community including the indigenous cultural influence. And for context this generation is part of the Hawaiian Renaissance which started in the 70s

According to Hawaii of the 1800 anyone who is born n raised here are considered Hawaiian (like American) I wasn't born on Calh or any other state. You may not have any Hawaiian blood, but you are a Hawaiian Nationalist.
Hawaii was never annexed by United States, Never, only the government was over thrown. Took our Queen and made her prisoner in her land. What they did was brainwashed my tutu n mom's generation. They put a stop to the language and almost took our Hawaiian culture. Hawaiian language was the spoken language of that time all nationalities spoke it when they were migrant to these islands
You are Filipino assent but considered Nationalist. I'm not American I'm a nationalist too. WE are not American! Hawaiian Kingdom was never taken away.
Hawaii never lost her sovereignty.
This is a whole new ball park now. United States of America did our people (The Hawaiians) an injustice. The state government says otherwise, BUT they cannot prove that Hawaii was annexed. There is no treaty between Hawaii n United States.
We will rise again The Hawaiian Kingdom.

To everyone arguing here, think of it like this. If I’m born in China, I’m a Chinese citizen, not an ethnic Chinese. People can be born somewhere and obtain that places citizenship/residency, but not ethnicity

You can still be Hawaiian and not have your ancestry from Hawaii if you live there. By your logic, Americans aren't American, because they came from Europe. The correct term you're looking for is, "native Hawaiian." Everyone who lives in Hawaii is Hawaiian, but native Hawaiian are their own thing

Stop, either you are American or not. Stop crying. Why are you not in the Philippines?

Smh @ anyone arguing against this. Hawaiian's are a small population who's homeland has changed drastically and not to their benefit. Don't take EVERYTHING away from them.

The annoying part is when you correct them on it and they get all defensive😒 People who live here are Locals/Hawaiian residents. People who have Hawaiian ancestry are Kanaka Maoli. Like seriously- you gonna tell me the children of the many Hawaiians who moved to Las Vegas aren’t Hawaiian just because they moved to another state? Some people forget Hawaiian was once a nationality and *not* an ethnicity. Some people will correct you on the term, others just don’t care.

PREACH 🙌🏾 I hear many people calling themself Hawaiian just because they have lived here on the islands for majority of there life, living in Hawaii doesn’t make you Hawaiian, only a local. Hawaiian is an ethnicity. Period.
