Our little family of 5 made the move to Oahu, Hawaii approximately 3 months ago and a common question that we've been getting is "How much does it cost to live in Hawaii?" It's no secret that Hawaii is an expensive place to live, but your cost on living here on the islands really depends on your values and lifestyle. With that said, you will have fixed costs such as housing, utilities, insurance, education, groceries, etc. In this video, I'll go some very general living costs that you can expect to incur living here on the island of Oahu.

I am so sick of people saying how expensive it is to live Hawaii. It’s dependent on where you are from originally. Yes, coming from the midwest like yourself it is more but being from the East or West Coast it is not at all. I live six months on Oahu and six months in West LA. The rent and costs in West LA is way higher. A travel magazine recently rated the top ten most expensive cities and the top ones were all in California or NY. Honolulu was the bottom ten. To put it in perspective, coming from Idaho and moving to Hawaii is a shock. But not for most people already living in high income cities.

Our family of 5 spends 400$ per month on food. We grow alot and have many fruit trees. Also our electric is 70$ per month it can be alot cheaper just depends on your life style.

I admit Hawaii does offer magnificent beauty, nature, lush green "pastures" and of course, the Aloha spirit, and the weather.

$150k at least with a Family of 5. That’s without going out to eat and only shopping at Walmart and Costco 💯

Truth. I grew up there. I have family there. I’m pretty minimal, and I feel like I could live there fine.

Some people have access to the base. I heard about their rents super cheap and includes all utilities compared to off base and the food at the commissary is cheaoer and they get cola. Cost of living allowance . Extra for living there so if you are military its not that bad. Join the military. But join in hawaii so it can be your home base. Actually thats what a lot of hawaiians do they join the coast guard then they never have to move

Depends if you have a mortgage or if you’re renting. $100K can be enough minus your largest expense. If you have either, you may have a tight budget but it’s probably doable.

I'd say you need at least $150k. Some things you didn't account for is health insurance costs, after school costs like piano, taekwondo, swimming, and savings/investments. What about eating out once in a while, shopping for household goods, and water bill? It ain't cheap here, but man is it so F in beautiful. I am grateful every day I wake up in this paradise

I’m thinking of moving to Hawaii with my husband and there are MANY things we need to concern such as expenses— I aim to live in Kakaako area (one bedroom unit) and how much do you think we need to spend monthly (rent + parking + utilities)

I'm a senior and If I sell my large mortgage-free home in San Diego I'll have enough $$ to pay cash for a small condo. I have pension income & investment income of about $95k a year. I think I will be ok.

Please Sir I need your precious opinion: I am 31 from Italy, In 2 years I will have 3 degrees, currently speak fluently 5 languages while I have studied 8 and I work as firmware developer in a French multinational company. Do you think I have a chance within the next two years to land a job in the tech sector in Hawaii?
The 5 languages I speak: Italian, English, French, German, Chinese. Plus I have knowledge of Japanese, Spanish and Russian.
The 3 degrees: Languages and cultures, Robotics, Applied artificial intelligence. The tech degrees have been undertaken under the stricter requirements of an international university in Germany.

Lol, I've been here 4 years, and if you want to eat and have a decent home, you have to make double what you needed on the mainland.

For the average person, please do NOT move to Hawaii. You most likely won’t enjoy living here. It’s not like New Zealand where there’s a lot of land to roam around. You can drive around each island in a few hours. Most people can’t conceptualize this because they’re used to living on a continent. It’s different and hard to adjust.
