Edward Fox is so English, he turned my coffee into a cup of tea.

I can watch Mr Fox in this scene again and again and never get bored of it. He delivers his lines with such relish that it sometimes, in the right mood, gives me goosebumps. A super actor and a wonderful bit of dialogue.

Edward Fox said later in life that this was one of his favorite roles that he played. Watching him perform, he really seemed to take relish in the delivery of his lines. Every leader is obliged at times to be an actor for his Fox enjoyed being a leader playing at acting.

Edward Fox is now 85 years old, and alive and well.

Edward Fox was 40 when this movie came out, but he has the presence of a giant leader in this speech beyond his years.

This has got to be the greatest war film ever made. A genuine masterpiece.

Even though I am American, when I first watch this scene, I knew I was watching the stuff of legends.

He was truly a unique general officer and his qualities of leadership were greater than any I have ever seen. In lecturing at the American service school I stated frequently that General Horrocks was the finest general officer I met during the war, and the finest corps commander".

I just love Edward Fox in this film - he really makes it.  I also love him in "The Day of the Jackal".

General Horrocks has a cameo at 3m 12 seconds front row, right hand side.

"Christ, not us again."
"What did you say?"
"Er, delighted sir, truly delighted."
LOL! They don't write dialogue like that no more.

What’s amazing at this point is that Horrocks was leading XXX Corps suffering the painful after effects of both a WW1 stomach wound and a gunshot wound from a German plane in Italy that nicked his spine

my Dad served under Horrocks and said Fox was a spit for him :)

I saw an interview with General Horrocks on "The World at War" recently and Edward Fox, who knew him, captured his personality perfectly in the film. Sir Brian seemed like a great old fashioned English gent.

My late Father was a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR). Horrocks was the Commander of XXX Corps, who were brigaded with the Black Watch. My dad always watched anything that Horrocks broadcast on early TV in the 50s. He respected Horrocks as a real personality Commander.

What a fantastic speech! So passionate and filled with humor too! He was truly my favorite character. You rarely find men like him nowadays.

Edward Fox gives the best performance among the major cast members, portraying the dynamic General Brian Horrocks.
